Film trailer copyright tags
From what I understand, since the trailer was filed with the copyright office along with the film, the trailer did get the original 28 years of copyright registration. However, since it was published before the film, it was found to require a separate copyright filing when seeking renewal in the last year of the original term. Since the studios never submitted these separate renewal filings, the trailers went into the public domain. Therefore, a generic "published between 1923 to 1963 and not renewed" copyright box would apply for these. --PhantomS 19:51, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- An issue that I am concerned about is the fact that we are linking to Sabucat's page on trailer copyright, since it does not explain the issue clearly. In addition, it's probably not a great idea to be linking to a commercial site on commons. --PhantomS 19:59, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- I've tried fitting trailer screenshot information into the standard Information template. What do you think of Image:Gregory Peck in Designing Woman trailer.jpg? --PhantomS 20:36, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- After doing a little looking around, I found a nice write-up on http://www.creativeclearance.com/guidelines.html#D2, which is a copyright information page for a clearance company (a company that specializes in researching and seeking permission for intellectual property for use in other works). By the way, another entry that was interesting was http://www.creativeclearance.com/guidelines.html#B1, which states that old publicity shots are also in the public domain. --PhantomS 08:05, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
- I've updated the Gregory Peck image to show the appropriate tag. Interestingly enough, the page doesn't say trailers before 1964. Instead, it says trailers before 1972. However, I am guessing it was more common to copyright film trailers later. In any case, I think a category would be useful, since there could be an appropriate explanation link in it without having it duplicated for every image. --PhantomS 20:10, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Stage Door Canteen
For the June Lang screenshot, I found that she is both closer to the camera and offers better profile shots while still at the table, rather than when she is standing in the crowd. As for the girl with the basket who is collecting mail, I do not know who she is off hand, but I could compare her screenshot to photos of stars known to be in the film. --PhantomS 09:25, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, photos of most of the cast are either unavailable on the internet or are of such poor quality that identification is impossible. Therefore, I was unable to identify her. Ironically, most photos of the cast that could be found in an image search came from the Commons screenshots. --PhantomS 07:17, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
emptying page
Hi, I came across the page "To have and have not (film)" which you created & emptied: just for future reference, if you create a page by mistake, you can place the template {{speedydelete|(give reason like "mistake - new category created here...")}} on the page to get it deleted. Otherwise it will sit there emtpy :) Kind regards, Deadstar 10:01, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I wasn't sure what to do with it. Rossrs 20:28, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Movie screenshots
Hi. Please stop uploading movie screenshots unless you have a specific link stating that these old movies did not renew their copyrights, or they are pre-1923. Thirdship 20:31, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

- User:Patstuart - He said that the most of my images were violation of copyright. He appealed to admin. I imitated other user's images. If my image is deleted, also other images should be deleted. It is unfairness that only I am done personal attacks of. Thirdship 22:05, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- That's very childish. If you believe the images are ok to use you should argue your case, not attack other users that might otherwise support you. Rossrs 22:29, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

- Hi. I was attempting to research copyright status of old films and noticed this case. I don't know if you resolved the issue of whether it might be USA free but UK/EU copyright? I was interested in a similar issue re the film 'the way ahead' [1], published 1944 in the Uk and 1945 in the USA under the different name 'the immortal battalion'. I got the impression that films in the USA were quite likely to fall out of copyright, and that the UK copyright period was 50 years. Thus the Uk copyright expired before a critical date 1996, which then meant that copyright would not be restored in the USA, because no copyright existed at that time abroad (change of laws). The EU seems to have created a 70 year copyright period more recently, but it seems not necessarily to apply to films made before another certain date. Which didn't solve my problem. Sorry about the vagueness, this is hints and tips from wherever I could find references. Sandpiper 21:10, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ross, I notice that most of the screenshots you are uploading are not in DVD resolution- can you possibly upload them in this resolution if possible? Thanks Gustav VH (talk) 16:09, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
- Also would it be possible for you to upload the original screenshot as well as crops so people can choose which to use? Thanks Gustav VH (talk) 16:10, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Ross, thanks for your answer. I just assumed you were getting the screenshots from DVDs and reducing them but if that is not the case I apologize. I think it is always best to upload the whole frame if you can, and add crops if you think necessary. Gustav VH (talk) 17:52, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, I notice you uploaded the James Dean screenshots, but still uploaded crops without the originals- could you upload the originals also? Thanks Gustav VH (talk) 13:36, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Hitchcock cameo roles screen shots, copyright issues
Hi Rossrs,
My user name is "Docbaba" and heavily contributing to the "Turkish Vikipedia", mostly to the "film" category.Recently I've created an article about the cameo roles of Alfred Hitchcock, here is the link: tr:Alfred Hitchcock'un Cameo Rolleri Listesi. Also decided to decorate it with the related "screen capture" photos and compiled the 32 Hitchcock cameo scenes into a single jpg photo [2]. (Uploaded it to an image hosting site temporarily). Before mounting the photo to the article, I've consulted with the admins of Turkish Viki, and I've been routed to your page. I've been told that you're an expert about copyright issues especially on Hitchcock movies.
I'd like you to have a look at the photo of compiled Hitchcock cameo roles. Can you tell the suitability of the picture for the Turkish Vikipedia (generally speaking Wikipedia) ?.
P.S. I've compiled the 32 cameo screen shots from a couple of web sites, namely filmsite.org and hitchcock.tv But it is possible for me to re-compile them from my own film archive.
Sincerely --Docbaba (talk) 07:15, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
"Docbaba" from Turkish Vikipedia
- Hi, thank you for your message. I greatly like the way you've collected all of the images. Unfortunately I think it would not be suitable for Wikipedia Commons. Most of the images are still covered by copyright, and the way you have used them is considered to be derivative. The copyright still exists even though the images have been changed. I think to use it, you would need to use it with a fair use rationale. I honestly don't know how Turkish Viikpedia regards this type of image. English Wikipedia for example would allow them only if a strong case could be made for their use. ie it would have to add to the commentary and be more than merely decorative. I'm sorry that I have not been able to help you, but I wish you all the best. Rossrs (talk) 08:19, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Question
Can you locate a legal screenshot trailer for Raymond Burr here I just filed a DR on the original image used there which is a non-free fair use photo...and does not even focus on Burr. (there are 2 people in it) Any ideas? Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:10, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. Both the images are sufficient. I will use 1 of them soon after this Friday was I'm a bit busy. Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:17, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- I used the other image because it is a much clearer view of him. Just 1 year before the original Perry Mason and pd too. Great! Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:27, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
Final question on a replacement image
Do you know if there are any copyright free images for the original Perry Mason TV show (1957-1966)? One or two photos featuring Burr with Della and/or Paul Drake is fine. I was just wondering since the image here is unfree and will be deleted...but this was a TV series and not a movie like Casablanca. No source was ever given so the photo is clearly a copyright violation here. If there is none, just let me know. Its not a problem at all. Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 04:38, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- That's quite OK. Thanks for looking anyway. Cheers from BC, Canada --Leoboudv (talk) 22:17, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
