Welcome back

Welcome back!  :-) (yes, okay - you are here again since some months... anyway) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:55, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Can you specify what is missing?

It's part of that category Category:Koch Ritterburgen in Wuerttemberg III and it is a book found on google books as specified an the german wikisource is interested in transcribing this book.

It is important to keep a cool head, especially when responding to comments against you or your edits. Personal attacks and disruptive comments only escalate a situation; please keep calm and remember that action can be taken against other parties if necessary. Please try to remain civil with your comments. Thanks!

--  Docu  at 19:39, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Considering how unhelpful and snide you've been, this seems more like provocation than anything else. Rd232 (talk) 19:43, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
I had the same impression when I saw your edits and edit summary when you reverted to implement a proposal that hasn't gained any consensus. Considering that you learned about edit notices, I can't have been that unhelpful. --  Docu  at 19:58, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Usage of talk pages/village pump

Please apply Commons:Talk_page_guidelines#Layout when posting new comments to talk pages such as the Village Pump.

The village pump is automatically archived. Please avoid doing selective archiving of comments that don't suit you. --  Docu  at 22:28, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

I like you. You're so helpful. Rd232 (talk) 22:29, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I am not clear about what this template is supposed to do but it looks weird, doesn't it ?Zolo (talk) 09:08, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

My bad, it should always be wrapped in noinclude tags, and I seem to have neglected that in some cases. I'll fix it. Rd232 (talk) 10:34, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok thanks. You can use this page to find the templates you have forgotten. I must also say that I don't quite see what you mean with "This template was translated by copying from the original Template:. Other forms of internationalization may be preferable in some cases"--Zolo (talk) 07:34, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I've fixed things. The meaning (maybe it can be put better) is to say that the entire template, including formatting, was copied from the original. Generally (not always) it's better to use a form of localization/internationalization which separates formatting and text (Autotranslate does this most clearly). Rd232 (talk) 18:19, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Ah okay, to me it makes sense but I don't think it applies to templates like . It is just a back-up for other internationalization template and does not contain any formatting that could be moved to another page.--Zolo (talk) 01:33, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
OK, I had another look, I guess you're right about that one - it doesn't apply formatting, it just provides translation logic. I applied localisation but I'm not sure if that's strictly correct either; maybe Translated tag needs another category. Rd232 (talk) 11:08, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

eh, I noticed that others have been cleaning up behind me and putting the text into a template for MOTD. Sorry to have needed this kind of assistance and thank you for helping.

Meanwhile, I just noticed that there are two interwiki links to english wikipedia on Template:Motd/2011-07 and I cannot find what description is causing them. It is the difference between en:Some article and :en:Some article (I think).

Heh, reading your talk page -- I am far from being "calm and collegial" myself and feeling seriously glad that I came here.

I am going to look it over again but a different and fresh set of eyes might be very very helpful for getting rid of those damn things -- if you are not doing anything else, etc. -- Queeg (talk) 06:20, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

ps -- my dealings with some of those with strong opinions on this page have been with them on very very shaky ground and with severe memory problems!! -- Queeg (talk) 06:21, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
found it! thanks for the help! -- Queeg (talk) 06:30, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Good. You're welcome :) Rd232 (talk) 17:01, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Db-g7

Hi Rd232, what and to what purpose did you change in this template? This morning quite a number of files appeared in the speedy-deletion-cat, of which I deleted a few until I noticed that there had been no direct edits in these files for months or even years. Obviously these files silently carried this template, which was suddenly activated. See for example File:Class 222 First Hull Trains Diagram.PNG. --Túrelio (talk) 07:07, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry it caused problems, but Db-g7 is an en.wp template for speedy deletion. I merely redirected it so it would do the same job here, for those expecting it to work. It's quite possible that those files tagged with it were supposed to be deleted long ago; at this point, best not though, or at least check with the uploader first. Rd232 (talk) 13:08, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Template BS-q

Done, and thanks for pointing it out. --Tuvalkin (talk) 06:54, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Excellent, thanks. If you have the time, perhaps you could skim Category:Uncategorized templates and see if you recognise any other templates you can help with. cheers, Rd232 (talk) 10:17, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Commons:Löschrichtlinien

Hallo Rd232! ;) Da ist wohl was schiefgelaufen.

Ja, irgendwie sollte man schon hinweisen.
Rd232 (talk) 08:53, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, you did bit move together all the associated pages connected with the template (Template:Fake flag/en, Template:Fake flag/es, Template:Fake flag/it, Template:Fake flag/lang, Template:Fake flag/mk, Template:Fake flag/pt, Template:Fake flag/ro, Template:Fake flags/layout, Template:Fake flag/ru)... AnonMoos (talk) 03:28, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Ha, well thanks for fixing. It was very late. :) Rd232 (talk) 07:21, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Rd232. Why is this page necessary? Thanks, --ZooFari 19:58, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

It's used by Commons:Village pump/Header to provide a editintro for the "start a new discussion" link. Does that answer your question, or did you mean "why is that necessary"? Rd232 (talk) 20:37, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Ah ok. But can't you use it in the template namespace instead? --ZooFari 20:43, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Because "noinclude" doesn't seem to work on editintros, and it'll get tagged as an uncategorised template, which will show up to the user. (I thought "noinclude" was supposed to work for editintros now, but when I tested it with the documentation template, that showed up when it shouldn't have.) Rd232 (talk) 20:47, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Ok then. Thanks for your hard work! --ZooFari 19:59, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

BTW, having Centralized discussion and Discussion menu seems a bit confusing to me. The centralized discussion template is more like a "current proposals/discussions" template so maybe it can be emphasized that way instead. The blue arrows icon perhaps could be linked to Discussion menu or Commons:Centralized discussion since my first temptation was to click on it. --ZooFari 20:09, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Well the two templates are clearly distinct. I see what you mean about the arrow icon and I've made it clickable, going to Commons:Centralized discussion. Rd232 (talk) 20:16, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Civility

Rd232,

Please remain civil and refrain from doing unexplained reversals. --  Docu  at 20:57, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

I just explained it at COM:VP. Please refrain from taking a giant steaming dump on the hard work of others. Rd232 (talk) 20:59, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
Please attempt to build consensus for your proposals rather than edit war over them. --  Docu  at 21:07, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
I've started a thread. If you want to propose closing VPR, do so there. Rd232 (talk) 21:09, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
We discussed your proposal at Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2011/06#Village_Pump_.2F_Proposals
Is there anything you want to add? Please attempt to remain civil and don't revert war. --  Docu  at 21:15, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
Anything to add? Nobody came up with any actual arguments against ("it's from en.wp! boo!" is not an argument), and then the discussion veered off into creating a different VP subpage - hardly a rejection of the concept. Rd232 (talk) 21:20, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
By the way, I just have to pause and appreciate the irony: I'm sure it would have been easier to build consensus if there had been a separate, well-established page for discussing proposals... Rd232 (talk) 21:23, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

I have reverted the merge war and request that both of you do not perform any actions until a discussion about the update gains consensus for further actions. Consider this a block warning for both. --ZooFari 21:14, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Rd232, can you remove the "Proposal" subheading in the thread you started, to avoid confusion? Not sure why it is necessary since a proposal about the thread is not intended to be discussed. Thanks, --ZooFari 21:51, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
Erm, it seems very necessary to me, to distinguish discussion about what happened in the past from the question of what to do next. Rd232 (talk) 21:55, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
Popping up a "proposal" randomly is not a good approach. Discuss the matter and try to resolve any issues. Doing this is better than just asking for supports or opposes by using such heading. I advise that you and Docu discuss about the proposed VP:Proposal page instead of the conflict itself. --ZooFari 21:58, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
"I advise that you and Docu discuss about the proposed VP:Proposal page instead of the conflict itself." - but that's precisely what I'm trying to achieve by using that heading and moving my comment below Docu's. Docu's position so far is to ignore the merits (which didn't get much coverage in the archived discussion either) and merely treat that archived discussion as proof the concept should be killed. I'm trying to separate that discussion about history out from a discussion from the merits of the concept (in the assumption that somebody will eventually engage with that!) without attempting to merely close down the issue of what happened in the past, if Docu wants to discuss that further. Category:Equations

Hi, I saw you moved Category:Equations from science to Math.

Mathematical equations is already existing. I created this category to be inclusive of Equations in Physics and chemistry and also to include equations in art. Equations in Physics, Equations in chemistry, Mathematical equations and equations in art should all be sub-cats. --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 06:26, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Well all equations are mathematical. It would make more sense to merge Equations and "mathematical equations" and have subcategories "Equations in Physics", "Equations in Art", etc. There's already "Equations in fluid dynamics". Rd232 (talk) 08:48, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Mathematicians are notorious for neglecting to use "Units" and this is the first rule of physics. My calculus teacher (calc II though differential equations) won my never dying approval/love when she showed how taking the derivative of a function worked on the notation also. Seriously, it was one of those real life moments; academically, mathematicians throw the units on at the end of the problem solving and physicists work with them through the whole problem -- this tendency shows itself in the outcomes.
Thermodynamics is the real evil though -- the equal sign/symbol is not used correctly. Physicists are not without flaw....
So, now I am a little jealous and wanting to (but not going to) suggest an exchange of recategorization tasks. Boohoo. -- Queeg (talk) 22:11, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Have you got the time for a QED or a w4 ? -- Queeg (talk) 12:10, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Erm, much like your comments on Jacklee's talk page, that's a bit cryptic. Rd232 (talk) 12:18, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
I "assumed good faith" due to an interest shown and opinions expressed at the pump. I proved it. x != y. -- Queeg (talk) 23:40, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
I'd be quite happy to chip in and say something, but I don't know what to say. Your command of the English language seems just fine, but sometimes you use it in ways that are obviously meaningful to you but quite hard for others to understand. I've no idea what QED or w4 is about, or what I can contribute to the discussion you pointed me to. Rd232 (talk) 00:31, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
They are two notations which mean "end of proof". -- Queeg (talk) 01:08, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I've heard of QED of course. :) Rd232 (talk) 08:35, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

I hate the village pump and other similar locations

It is this thing where I want to like/enjoy people and typically there are some places not to go/read/follow to maintain this goal of mine. I thank you for telling me when it needed my attention.

When I was studying physics and mathematics, it was one of the best times of my life; however there were a few places that my arrogance was miss-placed. Well, I can only think of one place and that was with people whose academic studies where on the path to being a technician rather than the know-it-all I was learning how to be. I regret this now for so many reasons -- the big reason would be that knowing how things work is not the same as being able to make them work or create them from schematic to actuality.

Most of my arrogance was well-placed though, even if the people I was being arrogant to were too stupid to know it.

Once I read a great thing in one of commons talk areas, however. A somewhat enlightened (by my definition) user was explaining to the almost brain dead how "Assume good faith" is the start of a problem and the beginning to a proof which needs to be proven and not just thrown into the soup as a solution.

I really don't like those talk places very often. Thank you so much. -- Queeg (talk) 22:20, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome. Thanks for your work on the categorization, there's a lot to be done there. Rd232 (talk) 22:52, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Something on my mind -- how would you rank a group of people who 'use the above as a template' on intelligence level and eh, if you would want to be working with in real life or on the internet? Where, a user who is communicated with at the pump instantly becomes an unlikeable person?
I am glad to see that you are making actual templates still.
When I said that previous stuff about not liking the pump, it was from reading it, plans being made for big and not well communicated changes and then those people would disappear. And there was a lot of wikitic cliches being used to which the type of people who would use them usually had no actual understanding of what it was they were mindlessly acronymizing and linking to.
Disliking individuals is not something I do since I concluded my puberty.
Just putting this here in case the pattern I have been seeing is real. -- Queeg (talk) 11:00, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

What do you know about something like this? -- Queeg (talk) 23:23, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Nothing. Sounds like a mistake. Why do you ask? Rd232 (talk) 22:53, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Hiding centralnotice and not sitenotice

So I realized this is blocking the sitenotice, but I think it also is suppressing the centralnotice as well. I'd really like a way to have site notices displayed but suppress centralnotices since I almost always ignore those anyway. Do you have any recommendations? Killiondude (talk) 06:31, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

What would you expect:
#centralNotice {display: none !important;}

and if you only want the central one:

#mw-dismissable-notice {display: none !important;}

Of course you have to remove

#siteNotice {display: none !important;}

from your css before. Kind regards. -- RE rillke questions? 11:49, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you! Killiondude (talk) 17:16, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Admin ?

Jcb de-admin

Hi Rd232, while it's perfectly clear to me that your collapse-"hiding" of the canvassing topic is well-meant, I doubt it's appropriate in regard to MoiraMoira's comment, as she commented not only on this, but also to this de-admin in general (and I'm currently writing an addition to this, not to the canvass topic). I would therefore ask you to think about a way to realize your intention AND to maintain MoiraMoira's comment visible in the main thread. --Túrelio (talk) 10:30, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

MoiraMoira's comments there were pretty general, and the bit not about the collapsed theme brief. I will ask her to comment outside the thread, as I don't see any other good solution that maintains the collapsing. Rd232 (talk) 11:38, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

An easy solution (which also avoids creating edit conflicts on the Sandbox) is to point people to User talk:Example/sandbox. So I've put that into Help:Gadget-UserMessages. More seriously, the script and the screenshot talked about "lang" links; I'm not getting these. Bug? Or does that not exist any more? Oh, clicking Attackpage got me a dialog asking about the language, but then used the data ("de") for the media link (see section above). Rd232 (talk) 19:48, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Right. I've just realised that the current script is not yet your new one! So I won't do any more. But I think a help page is useful to have for all but the simplest of gadgets. cheers, Rd232 (talk) 19:59, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Rd232, thanks for all your work improving the interface and easing translation of Commons' gadgets. RE rillke questions? 08:34, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Rd232 (talk) 15:55, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for weighing in! I really would like to know how widely share this view is.

I don't get the rationale you're following to replace some templates on some file descriptions with this one: could you please explain it in the documentation somewhere? Thank you, Nemo 22:43, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Well the short answer is that I wanted to clean up some categories, and Template:Wikimedia project screenshot was hard adding a category, so I hacked a solution to that, and began using the template.
The long answer - these things are really quite a mess.
  1. WikimediaCopyrightWarning and Copyright by Wikimedia appear to serve exactly the same purpose. Just for fun there is also Copyright by Wikimedia Polska and - and no guidance as to when those templates might be needed!
  2. Wikipedia-screenshot is generically worded and can easily be merged with the very similar Wikimedia-screenshot. The former has translations, the latter doesn't. Auto-categorisation complicates a merge.
  3. Wikiquote-screenshot, Wikisource-screenshot, Wikiversity-screenshot, Wiktionary-screenshot are the same, except for some wording identifying the project, and use of the project logo. They can fairly easily be merged. (Note that the latter 3 are actually outdated, as they don't mention CC-BY-SA.)
  4. Wikinews screenshot is nearly the same as Wikimedia project screenshot, except for accommodating Wikinews different content licensing; that can easily be merged.
  5. there's also FirefoxWiki, which uses Wikipedia-screenshot. And Free screenshot (which Wikimedia project screenshot uses for the MediaWiki license)
So, I'm fairly tempted to merge all of these into a supertemplate which handles everything, including options for the browser (Firefox, Chrome, Chromium, others). Existing templates would be converted into wrappers for that supertemplate. And in the process, it can give up on categorisation; I think standard categorisation is easier to work with (and a bot can convert existing uses). What do you think? Rd232 (talk) 00:36, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
Speaking of Wikimedia projects screenshots, I think that you could merge them all in a single template with the project as parameter (optional but recommended, mandatory for Wikinews). The template would still transclude Copyright by Wikimedia (WikimediaCopyrightWarning should be redirected, I suppose), unless it's specified with another optional parameter that no logo is included (in general, this is not worth the effort).
Copyright by Wikimedia alone would be still be used directly for logos and so on.
A template for MediaWiki only seems needed: we have lots of MediaWiki screenshots and it would categorize them in the MediaWiki category (or a specified subcategory). When the screenshot is not only of a MediaWiki component but also of a Wikimedia project, it would be passed the name of the project and would easily transclude the relevant template; I don't know if it's good to do the opposite (technically correct but perhaps confusing).
I would avoid at least specifying the browser with templates (there are too many of them): it must be free software, so the generic tag should be used, unless it's not under GPL (I don't know if all Wikimedia projects screenshots or not should include it or it can be avoided); logos must be de minimis in any case.
I hope this makes sense, Nemo 14:48, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I'll try and knock something up (a draft of the supertemplate) and we can go from there. Rd232 (talk) 13:52, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
  1. WikimediaCopyrightWarning redirected to Copyright by Wikimedia, with two translations not present in the latter copied across. Rd232 (talk) 15:53, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Quick note

Hi Rd232,

Just a quick note to let you know that I appreciate the work you are doing here on Commons. On top of my head, I think of your efforts in i18n, in steering discussions so that proposals actually lead somewhere, in documenting various aspects of Commons (Gadgets, help pages) and I’m probably missing other things. Keep up the good work!

Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 23:15, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! It's nice that someone notices :) Rd232 (talk) 23:54, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Re: Seemore

I happened to be seeing Category:Chioglossa lusitanica just before and after your changes to the template and noticed that instead of seeing the usual text "Ver também Chioglossa lusitanica" it read "Ver também {}". I am sorry for reverting, but I have no idea of how to fix it and with more than 4000 transclusions [3] it seemed wise to do so. Best regards, GoEThe (talk) 17:41, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

" I am sorry for reverting" - not at all! It was the right thing to do. I'm sorry I missed a key difference between the templates. I've fixed that and the redirect should now work fine. Rd232 (talk) 17:51, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Cool! Nice work! GoEThe (talk) 19:26, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

I only asked opinions of other users. Beause I'm not sure even about my understanding and approach. Furthermore I don't know whether they will nominate them or not. Formerly User:Mach was interested in copyright violation of Turkey-related images. But I couldn't see him in Commons. I asked User:Reality who are interested in same problem. User:Reality replied "I am." I asked opinions of not only Reality but also other users. For example, I asked possibility of copyvio on File:KoreanWarpostalstampTC.jpg and images in Category:Coats of arms of Turkey to User:Zscout370. User:Zscout370 nominated DR. I asked Reality006 because he understands Turkish language. Zscout370 said to me that he read the Turkish copyright law. Both of them didn't nominate all of them. I don't always agree with their nominations. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 02:54, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

OK, thanks. In the recent round of suspect files there are a lot of similar ones that are really PD-textlogo. I hope some agreement can be reached over that, to save unnecessary future DRs. I understand you're skeptical about what you can't see in Turkish copyright law, but it seems clear that you need to dig into some cases to get clarity. If you look at Commons:Threshold of originality, the same is true of other countries; there isn't a prescriptive law that says X, there are cases that give guidance. Broken userbox

One of your recent edits to User Wikipedia administrator has broken it on my userpage (I transclude my userboxes from this subpage), so I have undone those edits. Also, you seem to have changed the template to say "Wikipedia in English," while "English Wikipedia" both makes more sense and is more commonly used. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 23:05, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

OK. How did it break it? ... Anyway, I found PUser which is a working system for what I was trying to do, so I'll have another crack at it at some point. Rd232 (talk) 23:48, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Should have told you that in my first message, sorry. The content in the template was replaced with a redlinked /sub. Now that I think about it, that could probably have been fixed by replacing "/sub" in the template with "Template:User Wikipedia administrator/sub" --Philosopher Let us reason together. 22:54, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
OK, thanks. But it needed adapting anyway along PUSer lines, so it doesn't matter. Rd232 (talk) 22:57, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Re: File:Wikipedia Administrator.svg

The thumb of File:Wikipedia Administrator.svg looks smaller than the images it's next to, at COM:ICON. Any idea why? And there was already File:Admin mop.svg - why is the new version better?

On a related note, if you look at COM:ICON you'll see there's no Commons bureaucrat icon, and it shouldn't be hard to make one using the SVG tool of the Wikipedia bureaucrat icon, and the Commons SVG logo. That would be nice to have. cheers, Rd232 (talk) 23:08, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

The thumb was smaller than the images it's next to, due to a problem of proportions. The mop was too long compared to the Wikipedia logo. However, I fixed the problem.
Anyway the new image is better because it has less weight and better proportions.
About the Commons bureaucrat icon, I have created three different versions:
Choose the one you prefer. Greetings! Angelus (talk) 20:35, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. Definitely this one, to match the existing Wikipedia one. My only concern is that as so often the lower-contrast grey Wikipedia logo is easier to adapt for different icons, especially at low sizes. I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done to tweak this, like maybe lighten the Commons logo for the smaller size (needed for Bureaucrat)? Rd232 (talk) 07:34, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately there is not much to do for tweak this. This is why I created the other two icons, because at low sizes they are clearer and less confused. Angelus (talk) 19:45, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
I don't know, those alternate versions don't seem any better at small sizes. Is it possible that moving the tool icon up within the SVG would help, so that it overlaps the top of the Commons icon instead of the centre of its circle? Rd232 (talk) 14:46, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm tired so I'm going to reply in English. First reaction: brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! Second reaction: needs some tweaking.
  1. ✓ Done remove the MassDelete message (obviously)
  2. ✓ Done Change the "new to old" / "old to new" button to a dropdown menu, and add the word "sort" there somewhere. Though I wonder actually whether it's necessary to have this sort option. Special:Contributions just does "new to old" (newest first), and lets you jump back to the beginning of the list, which is much the same thing.
  3. ✓ Done The options need to be described with more than one word, perhaps with an even longer explanation as a tooltip.
  4. ✓ Done Every time I click an option, I get a "that's it, no more files" dialog. That doesn't seem necessary.
  5. ✓ Done Some way to change the username, so it's possible to look at someone else's file list.
  6. I'm trying to think of some way to make the 4 filtering options less confusing. Two things I can think of: i) add two radio buttons. The first is the default, and it's "show all non-deleted files". The second is "filtering options", and gives you the 4 checkboxes to play with. ii) give each filter option an icon, and add that icon to each image in the gallery as appropriate.

Also, I have only one deleted file, which doesn't show up immediately, only after unticking Deleted and then reticking it. And it's numbered file 0, which is a bit odd.

Rd232 (talk) 00:10, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try my best to fix the issues an build in the very good ideas. First, the script loads 40 uploads (of all sorts) and shows 24 of them (if you do not filter). If you click filter or next page, it loads the next 40. That has performance-reasons. Even Special:ListFiles is unable to determine, how many uploads you have. If you would load all uploads, you'll get such a slow tool like these on toolserver. -- RE rillke questions? 08:58, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Today I found some time to improve the script. But there is still something to do. -- RE rillke questions? 22:15, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
I was just looking at it, in fact. Great stuff! Love the icons. Some feedback: I would suggest that the icon position for files needs to be at the same horizontal level across a row - it looks untidy otherwise. That suggests icon top right below the preview, as that saves figuring out where the bottom of a row's descriptions is. The icons should probably be smaller as well, to make them closer to the height of the text in the filter options. Also the "I" in "Files, I" is not really necessary, and ends up wrong if you change the username to someone else. And the page number box needs a "Page" descriptor - currently it looks like the number of deleted files if there's only one page. Finally, I think some layout tweaks would help. (i) drop the massdelete message (ii) begin the page with "Files uploaded by" followed by the username box (iii) have the checkbox filtering options below that, with a box around each option for visual clarity (iv) have the sort and in-category options below that. PS Question: how do you get the numbers for files at the top right? Does it affect performance? It seems to be wrong in my case, it says 6 but I only have 4+1 deleted. Rd232 (talk) 22:40, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
By the way, I suggest avoiding any temptation to add extra complicating features (I've resisted suggesting some things myself). Keeping it simple(ish) at this point allows then to take into account feedback from users. Rd232 (talk) 22:44, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Concerning the last sentence: This number appears after the tool loaded all files. For you, it appears on the first page, for me on the ~9th one. It is just a log-count. On the one hand this could be confusing, on the other hand, every log-entry is an upload. -- RE rillke questions? 22:48, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I see, it's 6 because I re-uploaded a file I created. That will be confusing unless the meaning of the numbers is made very clear. Maybe it's better to leave these counts out for now, and think about how to handle them later? Rd232 (talk) 00:42, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Concerning the UI, it looks pretty good to me, now. Thanks for your support. -- RE rillke questions? 17:34, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Wow, you're a star! It looks and works great. I'm so impressed you've even got good icons! Couple of things though: (i) the icons below the image preview are sometimes overwritten by the text. This is minor, but it's there. (ii) the log counts I think are liable to confuse people, especially with the "MediaWiki bug" issue in there. If you want to keep it, maybe it could be collapsible, and collapsed by default? I'm tempted to say get rid of it though, because doing so would also solve the problem of the "Filtering options" help tooltip, which I think is also confusing, even apart from the API remark which I don't understand. Is there a risk of the script being blocked by overuse? Or just a particular user of the script? (iii) there's enough of a delay with the first loading of the images after the UI loads that a "loading..." placeholder (just a simple static text) would probably be helpful. (iv) "new here and need help" is an invitation to get all sorts of requests on that page! I'd suggest putting that over on the right in a box, and having two links, one to the Help Desk, and one to the script help page, with the two clearly distinguished, eg "new here and need help?" points to the Help Desk, and "Help with/feedback on this script" points to the script talk page. (v) the "Page" help description is both a standard tooltip and your popup, and they are duplicative and clash. PS Again, I have to say, very well done. Rd232 (talk) 22:19, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Next steps will be integrating with what I've done with my script (which I seem to have broken somehow :( ). I think it would be ideal to have two links. Link one, the "my uploads" link at the top, pointing at your script preloaded with the logged-in user's name. Link two, in the toolbox, shown on any user / usertalk page, and preloaded with the username of the userpage being looked at. Link one still needs to be deactivatable by gadget, I think, while link two is probably fine as a permanent fixture (on user pages). There's also then the issue of translation. We've got some of the translations covered in my script, and perhaps one of us could approach the various people who contributed to that for translation of the UI. Rd232 (talk) 22:19, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Good, whatever, I guess evening. I hope I could address the majority of your suggestions. -- RE rillke questions? 21:00, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks again for your suggestions. Script now saves the visit-count in a cookie. I don't know whether you use session-cookies or not and whether you logged out in-between. If not you will probably not see the new "Welcome message". It will appear until 3 usages, then it is reduced to icons and a link to a random file-list-tool.

What do you think about the metamorphose-button statistics?

Should I remove the (?) from the front of the pages-control-panel?

I think I have to explain the "locking message": For some users, queries to API take very long, (e.g. LX - I don't know why) which means that is really hard for the server to retrieve the results. Usually the query-API is not affected by quotas but I am sure this will change in future (per user). Additionally this tool will increase the difficult-API-query-count drastically. Therefore I thought about someone will complain about this script. On the other hand I can say, hey I am on the client side and you, the server operators have to provide the resources or limit the traffic.

Tomorrow I'll add a global usage- tool tip (a bit difficult because need to be dynamically loaded), afterwards I have to add a few more filtering options and try to find a way to display image revisions correctly.

Finally, I am going to put all descriptions in a separate i18n-object. Before doing so, I have to read the new messaging-system-guide again. Something will change in MW 1.18 and I'd like to be prepared. Awaiting your feedback, sincerely -- RE rillke questions? 21:58, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Looking really good now (!), but still some minor points of presentation.
  1. ✓ Done The (?) from the front of the pages-control-panel should be after the "Page X" box.
  2. ✓ Done That (?) shouldn't appear if there is no >>, because then it's not needed and is slightly confusing
  3. ✓ Done It might help to make it "Page 1 of ?" if it's not known how many pages there are, and "Page 1 of X" once X is known.
  4. ✓ Done The "General help" tooltip should be slightly more descriptive, eg "General help via Commons:Help Desk"
  5. ✓ Done The script help tooltip should be slightly more descriptive, eg "Help with this tool, and known issues".
  6. I'd also consider hiding those links under a popout "Help" button or icon (like the Statistics), because then you can use the tooltip descriptions for the links, and you'll get less traffic on the script page which should have gone to the Help Desk. (I think that has the potential to be a big issue, once the script goes live in a prominent location, and this may need tweaking afterwards, but right now, it's asking for trouble, especially with the blue (?) icon for the script page.)
  7. If you make the popout "help and other tools", you could put the "global usage" link there as well, and then potentially other tool links in future.
  8. ✓ Done The image dimensions are getting an apostrophe divider in them, like 1'433 and 2'233. This looks odd. Personally I don't think any divider is necessary here, because localising it is extra hassle. But in English it should be a comma.
  9. ✓ Done "welcome at Gallery-Tool" should be "welcome to the Gallery Tool".
  10. ✓ Done "Files the user created new on commons" - Commons should have initial C capitalised.
  11. ✓ Done "Files the given user overwrote" - "given" is unnecessary and inconsistent with the other tooltips. Maybe explain slightly more, eg "Files where the user overwrote an earlier version of the file"
  12. ✓ Done in the filtering options description, it's currently "Files, user x". I'd drop the "user x" bit as unnecessary. It may cause issues in localisation, and dropping it saves space. If "user x" is dropped, "overwrote" should become "overwritten".
  13. Is the "submit" button next to the sort order needed? The script seems to update the page automatically when you use the dropdown.
  14. ✓ Done I've seen in your script edits something about detailed information and global usage, but I can't see any sign of that in use. Or is it just the toolserver link? I had the impression this was something else.
  15. ✓ Done "Filtering options(?):" - remove the colon. It looks slightly odd and isn't necessary.
  16. ✓ Done "Gallery tool: Files uploaded by" -> "Gallery tool: files uploaded by"

I think that's it. I think the Statistics button is good. You mentioned other filtering options and something about image revisions... On the one hand, I'm inclined to say "let's go! let's not complicate it any more", but on the other hand, because of the trouble of updating localizations, it's probably worth taking a bit more time before people begin translating, if there's more you think you can do without overcomplicating it. Once again (let me know if you're getting bored of this :) ) - you're a star, thanks so much for doing this. Rd232 (talk) 23:53, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

8) de:Zifferngruppierung#Zur_Problematik_von_Punkt_und_Komma_f.C3.BCr_Tausender-_und_Dezimaltrennzeichen suggested this and it is widely used in Switzerland. I'll exchange this with a small white space.
13) You could hit enter after inserting a user, like you can with categories-filter but I unsure about that.
14) If you click on the Filename, you'll get a dialog. LX requested a Log-option so I built one. -- RE rillke questions? 15:02, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
@ 13) ok, then the submit button should be moved before "sorting", and changed to "update" @ 14) got it. nice, but the average user will expect the filename to go to the file page; the "detailed information" view should be accessible some other way (an extra icon perhaps, like the metadata m?). Rd232 (talk) 18:20, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Now, I added "revision-awareness". Only your files are shown. It took me a lot of time because I had to change the "core-functions". I would be pleased if you can suggest, which filter/ option would be most useful to implement. BTW, we can run a test-drive for users with English settings before going to translating. I know there are still some unanswered points. Again, thanks for your feedback and the words of encouragement. -- RE rillke questions? 19:41, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

arbitrary break

Excellent, excellent. A test drive with just English for a short period is a good idea, to get wider input before getting translation under way. (Maybe with one other language, most obviously German, to test translation mechanics as well.)

I'm not too sure what other filtering options are needed (but then I don't have all that much experience in this area, using Commons in this way). As long as all of a user's uploads can be shown, and the ones which are currently top revisions are easily identifiable, that's the main thing. ✓ Done So maybe an additional filter "only show files which are the top revision".

About the "revision-awareness", it's great to have this, but I seem to have lost a file. My upload of File:Eric Voegelin.jpg shows up in Chrome with the old version of the script (I can't seem to get the current version there right now), whilst with the current version in Firefox, it's not there (but both versions of File:Electricity substation danger.jpg are). Also, showing multiple revisions for a file is probably not ideal, especially when one of them is the top revision.  We have to talk about

Multiple revisions should really be merged into one gallery entry somehow, maybe with a popup that summarises (eg "this is User X's latest revision of this file, the user also contributed Y older revisions, full list at...") and gives a link to the file page, which lists them all. Or if some people want to see all the revisions, maybe have a filter option, "show only the user's latest upload of each file" (ticked by default). Remember, it's billed as a list of files, not a list of uploads, and a list of files is what most people will expect to see. Multiple uploads per file should at least be clearly linked visually... though I'm not sure of a good way to do that right now.

Other minor issues:

  1. ✓ Done "Overwritten" as a filter option - should be "Overwrote". I know I said "overwritten", but now I see it, it's misleading, it sounds like "user's upload which was later overwritten"
  2. ✓ Done A full stop is left over between "reverted" and "in category"
  3. ✓ Done the "d" link to detailed information is linking both the d and the following space, i.e. "d_"
  4. ✓ Done "in category" needs spacing between the text and the following textbox
  5. ✓ Done "Page:" box would look better with just a bit of spacing around the text (inside the grey box).
  6. ✓ Done user textbox tooltip -> "the user whose contributions are to be shown". But maybe this tooltip isn't necessary anyway?
  7. ✓ Done The "m" metadata link should probably have some clue that it provides a popup - most obviously, the same underline style that the license data has.
  8. ✓ Done The "m" metadata link seems to select the model data to display in the tool; I'm not sure that's really necessary.
  9. ✓ Done (top) and (old) are great, and important. Let's distinguish them somehow by colour to make them easier to spot (and drop the bold, which doesn't really help with this, and is a little distracting otherwise). A method which might be good for scanning would be to change the border colour on the image preview (eg make "top" a green border, and leave "old" as the current grey).
  10. ✓ Done Maybe put d, m and (top)/(old) at the top of a file's description, below the image. More consistent placing for these will be helpful. Possible Also, if you have the time/patience, you could try some formatting options like putting all these (icon, d, m, (top)/(old)) in a separate box below the image, above the filename.
  11. ✓ Done Icon spacing issues: if you look at your gallery, you'll see the "created" icon fits neatly between the file number and the license data, while the other two icons look a bit squashed in, especially for file numbers > 9. Though for file numbers >99, all the icons overlap the text.
  12. ✓ Done Maybe can save a little space by dropping "File:" from the displayed filename (without breaking the link of course :) )

Bugs

  1. ✓ Done "in category" seems to be broken; trying to use it dumps me out of the script (back to my user page).
  2. ✓ both using a non-existent username the script looks like it's stuck "loading"; it throws an error but puts it at the top of the page. Remove the "loading..." when the error happens, and maybe throw in an icon of some kind to make the error message more prominent.
  3. ✓ Done using a lowercase initial username (eg "rd232" instead of "Rd232") gives weird results, with claims that uploads are "deleted revision"s
  4.  Doing… File numbering sometimes starts at 0 instead of 1. Yours start at 0, mine at 1.

Feature ideas:

  1. Deferred to maybe the "d" link to detailed information could do a popup, like the metadata popup, for the global usage data, as I think this the most useful to have quick access to. For space reasons it could be in summary form (just xx.wikipedia etc, without the page titles, with a cut-off "..." in case even that's too much data), and "full global usage" and "other detailed information" links in the popup.
Deferred to related idea: put a number below the image indicating the number of global-usage pages transcluding it. Maybe with a circle around the number.
  2. move "files uploaded by X" out of the header, and put it at the top of the page below the header, and make X a link to the relevant user page. Then put a little "switch user" link next to it, and only when that is clicked, show a textbox and "go" button.
  3. Deferred to List mode (as opposed to the current gallery mode, an alternative display option): try to show all the data for an entry on one line, and don't show image previews. Instead, have a box or link in each line the user can mouseover to see an image preview pop up. This would save screen space, speed loading, maybe reduce API loads (?), especially useful for users with slow connections and/or smaller screens.

(probably) pie in the sky:

  1. ✓ not hotcat but dropdown +for user Any chance the "in category" textbox could use Hotcat's category prompting? That would be useful.
  2. Figure out where the only reason a user's last revision of the file is not the file's latest revision is due to a bot change (eg rotatebot) and identify this somehow (eg (top*))
  3. Allow user to choose size of previews
  4. Allow user to change number of previews per page

Once again, thanks! Rd232 (talk) 00:02, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

If you aren't, you should become web-designer. Great ideas. Thanks for the cookie. :-) -- RE rillke questions? 13:51, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
BTW, you are not in the revision-table of File:Eric Voegelin.jpg. That's why script stats that the revision became deleted. There is no way to find out whether this is true or just the failure of an admin who deleted the wrong revision.
What do you think about the background-color-chage? I am Inconclusive. -- RE rillke questions? 13:51, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
I hope - regarding to your current profession - you took my suggestion not as an insult. It should just emphasize that I am happy to get professional help. Thanks for testing every detail with different browsers.
I hope you study the new features and give me feedback.
Preventing a question, imagine the case, a file was overwritten by another user. In this case the two new filtering options are required.
File:Eric Voegelin.jpg: Is it appropriate presenting the "deleted icon" or should, instead, the current version be used?
-- RE rillke questions? 20:34, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, I do have quite a bit of semi-professional web (and print) design experience (I'm not much good with the hands-on techy bits by professional standards, though I've kludged quite a few websites over the years), though not so much recently. Glad I can help. I'll try and be quick here with my suggestions/comments as I need to get to bed :)

Re Eric Voegelin.jpg: right, yes, [4] it's a deleted revision, so the behaviour is correct. Deleted icon is the right choice here as well, since there are several things distinguishing deleted files from deleted revisions, and showing the current version would be misleading.

  1. ✓ Without your support the tool would not look like it actually looks. Thanks for the acknowledgement (I've just seen in the welcome note), but it's really not necessary, and despite my input it's really your work.
  2. ✓ Done point 8 above, (camera) model metadata: this is still showing under the image (though not in the popup). I think it should be included in the popup, but not under the image (it should just be the m, next to the d.)
  3. ✓ Done green colour highlight for (top) looks good with the background green as well
  4. ✓ Done category prompting works! I really wasn't expecting that, that's fantastic! :)
  5. ✓ Done "enumerating" (in the tooltip for the date filter box) is correct, but the simpler "listing" would be better
  6. ✓ stupid browsers (IE, too) missing unicode chars in Chrome the thousands space comes up as a small square box; it's fine in Firefox (with current version of script in both).
  7. Looking at your gallery, it says "page 1/2" when it doesn't yet know how many pages there are (certainly >2)
  8. ✓ Done When a category filter means no files are shown, a message needs to be shown. Probably for other situations with no file results too. Something like "No files meeting these filter criteria".
  9. ✓ Done point 2 under "Bugs" above seems unchanged from before (still says "loading...").
  10. ✓ removed from "top" deleted files appear in every state (unspecified / top / old)
  11. ✓ Done tooltip of "state" dropdown: "filer" -> "filter"
  12. You tried to pre-empt the question, but I'm still confused by the presence of the "hide old revisions" checkbox together with the state dropdown. If you didn't have "unspecified" in the dropdown, the dropdown would be exactly the same as the checkbox, as far as I can tell. Certainly, ticking "hide old revisions" and choosing state "old" gives no results... (and incidentally "page 1/0"). I think the dropdown may be better, since you can give more description. So drop the checkbox, and drop "state" and change "unspecified" -> "current or previous version of file", "top" -> "current version of file" and "old" -> "previous version of file".

cheers, Rd232 (talk) 00:44, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

re the file numbering issue: you probably know this, but I've just worked out that it's because the numbering starts at 0, and then skips deleted files/file revisions, but includes them in the numbering. In my list, I have (with "show deleted" unticked), numbers 1, 3, 4. With "show deleted" ticked, it's 0,1,2,3,4. Rd232 (talk) 10:36, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

arbitrary break 2

Concerning the last point, consider the following situations ("hide old revisions" means "hide old revisions of the user"; ! means "not checked"; the table shows boolean values returned by the filter-function):

Case/Statetop && hide old revisionstop && !hide old revisionsold && hide old revisionsold && !hide old revisions

specified user created image, somebody else has overwritten the image afterwards

falsefalsetruetrue

specified user has overwritten image, somebody else reverted to old version afterwards

falsefalsetruetrue

specified user has overwritten image multiple times, somebody else reverted to old version afterwards

falsefalsetrue only for one revisiontrue

specified user has overwritten image one time and nobody else did something afterwards

truetruefalsefalse

specified user has overwritten image multiple times and nobody else did something afterwards

true only for latest revisiontruefalsefalse

- the checkbox is for kicking out multiple revisions of one user and the select is for the state of a revision, regardless whether there are other results of the same state. If you have any clue how to present this matter in a comprehensive way, let me know.

Bot-detection is possible but I need a volunteer gathering bots which are overwriting images.
Numbers of gallery-boxes per page could be a custom option in custom common.js. It is possible to add a dialog that automatically configures the user's js. Cookies are often not persistent.
Size of preview is also possible but will require a moderate number of changes.
List-mode would be better to implement in a smaller, separate script.
circle of global usage. I would have this done already + filter but unfortunately API is unable to limit the entries per file to return, but has a threshold of 500 per query. I query 40 files at once and I don't want 100 global usages of one file and none for the others. Querying every single file is too slow. The currently used dialog loads its content on demand.
I can "grey out" the submit-button if a user does not exist. I think that would be the best way to prevent this error.
Anyway, a nice error message on a prominent place will follow soon. -- RE rillke questions? 10:40, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Concerning 7): Did you specify a filtering option? For me, the total pages number is a "?". -- RE rillke questions? 10:43, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
✓ was indeed an issue when switching user Point 7) - it seems fine now; or at least I can't reproduce the problem.
✓ Done Bot detection: bots should be listed at Commons:Bots AFAIK. The most important ones to detect would be User:Rotatebot and User:Cropbot, because these are likely user-requested minor changes to the previous version, rather than a new upload from another source.
Doing… List mode: OK it could technically be another script, with the two linked in both directions (so to the user it would look a separate mode). I think this is probably the most useful new feature to have, above variable preview size etc.
I see more good changes - category popup is very useful! I would put (top)/(old) at the end of the first line though, so that the three letter popups c/d/m are together. Also I don't think it's a good idea to make the file dimensions italic; it makes it harder to scan the gallery.
In your gallery, "hide old revisions" + state:old gives no results (obviously?) and "page 1/0".
Now, about state revision thing... well if you need a truth table to explain it, it's probably too complicated! I'll have some coffee and have a think about it. Rd232 (talk) 11:15, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
✓ Done OK, I think I've worked out the problem - two meanings of "old". A) "not the current version of the file" and B) "not the user's most recent upload for this file". Would it be clearer if the checkbox was "show only the user's latest upload for each file"? Then if the state dropdown was "top - upload is current version of file" and "old - not current version of file", I think it might be clear enough what's going on.
✓ Done Also, maybe all revisions of a file could have the same file number, plus a distinguishing letter if there's more than one revision by that user. So the oldest revision would be 4a, then 4b, then 4c etc. If the checkbox is ticked and a file has 3 revisions, you'd see 4c. (This would work well in most cases, but there will be some files that have >26 revisions, so you'd need to accommodate that as well, maybe just by adding more letters, like 4za, 4zb, 4zza etc, just to make sure the system doesn't break in edge cases.) This way, the number is a file number, not an upload number, which should be more intuitive.
✓ Done Where someone else reverts to a version uploaded by the user; is that then "old" or "top"? If this situation is easily identifiable, I'd be tempted to call it "top", but mark it with a star ("top*").
✓ Done I've just noticed you always put a full stop at the end of your tooltips; tooltips usually don't have one, and it looks just very slightly odd, I'm not sure why.
About the acknowledgement of my input - thank you. :) But let's drop the "professionally". We wouldn't want people thinking I was getting paid :) Rd232 (talk) 12:19, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Bingo: Unterschiedlich konstruiert! Das ist alles sehr entwicklerfreundlich. Have a nice weekend! -- RE rillke questions? 18:05, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Rd232 (talk) 23:20, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Do you think we're ready to launch a test-run for en only? -- RE rillke questions? 12:04, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I think so. Very small issue I've noticed now: the underlinings on the d/c/m/(top). It's OK for d to be different (since it doesn't provides a popup summary, you have to click) - but the popups should all have the same formatting. The m formatting is best. Rd232 (talk) 00:08, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Test Run for en

I asked for making a copy of User:Rillke/JSONListUploads.js and paste it to MediaWiki:JSONListUploads.js. To install I suggest applying this changes to User:Rd232/myuploads.js. Please test it before deploying to Commons.

i18n - Today I had a talk to the devs. Either I create an extension which would be the most difficult solution but I could easily use TranslateWiki. Or I use the old-fashioned way. Or I set up a compatible SVN and use TranslateWiki. I have to check out the possibilities.

Congratulations: There were only 3 critical voices about your suggestion adding this link and more than 200 in favour. A brilliant idea with a lot of consent. Sincerely -- RE rillke questions? 20:13, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Your sandboxed change didn't work for me, so I've used the approach your script uses. Is there a particular reason you suggested doing it differently? (I would go and request deployment now, but I think I'd better wait for a reply on that.) And yes, congratulations to me on being lucky enough to find someone willing and able to do such a brilliant job of implementing my idea :) Rd232 (talk) 13:05, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
BTW, once your script is copied into MediaWiki space, you won't be able to edit it. Maybe we should just leave both scripts where they are, and use the approach of User:Rd232/vector.js to call them from MediaWiki:Common.js? Only admins can edit other users' Javascript, so in security terms there's no difference. Rd232 (talk) 13:15, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
I don't trust in a lot of other users and I can understand if they do not trust in me. So it's better if there is a copy in MW-Namespace, where I am unable to insert malicious code, even if never would do something like that.
The approach I suggested will work when the script is available in MW-Namespace, at MediaWiki:JSONListUploads.js. My proposed method has 3 advantages:
  1. One can open the link in a new tab.
  2. It behaves closer to UploadWizard and other tools we are running. E.g. If it's your setting and you edited a page and click on the link you get a warning that changes can be lost.
  3. Load on demand: Speeds up loading time. Script will only be loaded and interpreted if user clicks on the link.
I use a similar method for my AjaxMassDelete (new name is VisualFileChange). Just click here to see how it works. -- RE rillke questions? 13:52, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Well that sounds good, but it's not working for me at all. Clicking your link above does nothing at all, in both Chrome and Firefox. (I even tried it in Internet Exploder - same thing, except the second time it seemed to crash.) Rd232 (talk) 15:58, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
It does not work because I forgot that I changed the name :( My fault. But I promise, when my edit-protected requests are fulfilled, it will work. -- RE rillke questions? 17:25, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
OK, I think I see. Your sandboxed change should work once the script is at MediaWiki:JSONListUploads.js. I'll poke people at COM:AN. PS Maybe you should reconsider running for admin, or else asking whether people are OK with the script being in your userspace, because maintaining the script will be a lot more hassle if you can't edit it directly. Rd232 (talk) 18:59, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
OK, we're just about ready. But I remembered that I wanted to have a link in the toolbox which would load the file list with the username of the userpage you're looking at (eg If I'm at User:Rillke it loads Rillke's file list). I've got my script adding this link, so can you get your script to recognise the page Special:UserGallery and respond appropriately? If you prepare that edit request, I'll ask for all the necessary changes at COM:AN. PS your script shouldn't add its own link in the toolbox either - that's duplicative of mine. Rd232 (talk) 12:14, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Special:UserGallery is nice but I would have to use a referrer to get the specific user. Otherwise my script does not know which user to take. But that can be very confusing if accessing referrers is blocked or the page is loaded from a bookmark. The way, I suggest is adding the user-name to the link Special:MyGallery/username. For example Special:MyGallery/Rd232. A suggestion for implementation will follow on User talk:Rd232/myuploads.js. -- RE rillke questions? 13:10, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

OK, fine. I assumed that you'd be able to get the username from the page title; but this way will be more elegant. Rd232 (talk) 13:19, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Hm, I installed it but it doesn't work. Does MediaWiki:JSONListUploads.js need adapting? Rd232 (talk) 14:13, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, it needs. I am going to set up the editprotected request. -- RE rillke questions? 14:25, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi.
Rd232 (talk) 08:42, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for reporting. Should be fixed now. -- RE rillke questions? 15:37, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Should I ask someone else whether he could perform the necessary changes? Or is there a problem with the script-code? I fear I don't understand Krinkle sometimes... -- RE rillke questions? 15:39, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Rd232 (talk) 18:52, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
-- RE rillke questions? 20:06, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

New behaviour

I updated the code. Vielen Dank. -- RE rillke questions? 15:35, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Pure image view is gorgeous! Only issue I can see is that long category names (exceeding width of the image) aren't wrapped properly. My only thought is - it's so nice to get that popup with info in pure image view; by comparison hovering over the little 'c', 'd', 'top' in gallery view is harder (as the target is much smaller). Maybe hovering over the image in gallery view could present the same popup as pure image view? Rd232 (talk) 16:14, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
I need a cute idea for the issue with the overlong category names. Maybe just cutting them and when hovering, extending (so they will overflow)?
The popup for gallery-view, too: Good idea.
Now users are able to export lists of matching files of their uploads (new button). I think it's a great feature. Would you suggest using some icons in the new dialog's interface?
Next steps will probably include a slideshow. But there are currently more important things. -- RE rillke questions? 21:45, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Hm, overlong category names... well the status quo seems fine, with them wrapped (except that the wrapping wastes a bit of space - you're trying to avoid wrapping category names, but where this is unavoidable, the name should start right after the previous category, and not on a new line). But maybe both very long category names, as well as files with many many categories, need special treatment. I would think for you could put a limit on the overall space given to categories in the popup, and then add a "more..." link, and use the "popup-in-a-popup" approach that you currently use for the metadata. That secondary popup can be much wider, and show only the categories. Oops, I'm still on an old version so I'll save now and try and get the new. Rd232 (talk) 13:22, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

OK, I've seen the 'export' button now... which is a nice new feature, though maybe "export" is a bit confusing; I was a bit disappointed that it doesn't have anything to do with exporting the actual files (downloading); a really cool feature would be downloading a zip file of the selected files! But that's probably impossible in Javascript(?), so maybe it should be called something like "export to gallery".

  1. ✓ Done name (in tooltip) "export to gallery: export this list.." [plus current tooltip description]
  2. ✓ Done provide a small screenshot of each gallery export option, to help distinguish them (✓ Donelive preview would be nice, but surely not worth the effort).
  3. ✓ Done rename the "Imagestack" option to "Gallery with manual slideshow (Imagestack)"
  4. remove the OTRS option from this list, and move it to a separate "OTRS" icon. Also, don't make the "email to OTRS" send an email without popping up a confirmation dialog that an email is actually about to be sent (ideally confirming the email address it will come from, and giving the option to open the local mail client instead).

Rd232 (talk) 16:14, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for testing. Unfortunately it is impossible to generate zips with JavaScripts and offer them to download. Perhaps a toolserver tool could be invoked but I do not have an account there. I didn't change the OTRS option, yet. Did your client sent the e-mail without a dialog? What do you think as of now? -- RE rillke questions? 21:25, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
I wouldn't want to burden the toolserver; if there's not a bug asking for zipping via API, we could file one. The client seemed to send an email immediately after clicking the "send email to OTRS" button, which I didn't expect. Now it's got "now" in the button it's clearer, but if possible and not too much trouble I'd suggest a button to open the email in the local client - for an important email like that, I think a lot of people will be more comfortable with that. The gallery-type previews in the Export dialog are good, though if I'm honest an image that doesn't have text in it (like the MediaWiki logo does) will probably be easier to interpret for the average user. Other than that, I don't like the current (0.1.6.1) vertical listing of the help options - it pushes everything down. You should be able to fit all the items on one line, if you use short descriptions like Script Documentation / Commons Help Desk / Export list to Gallery. And maybe squeeze the link to Special:MyUploads into the first sentence: "welcome to the Gallery Tool, an advanced version of Special:MyUploads". cheers, Rd232 (talk) 22:04, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
They are only listed when you use the tool first or deleted your cookie ;-) -- RE rillke questions? 22:09, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Oh, OK. Still inelegant though - I'd put a box around them at least (different style from the other two boxes). Rd232 (talk) 22:11, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the image-tip. I am still confused about the auto-sending of e-mails. Your client should not immediately send a mail when you click on links like that: [5]
It doesn't. Last time I didn't get the usual popup dialog from a mailto, so I thought it had actually sent the email. Now you've replied I've checked again, and I do get the mailto popup (though without the status bar showing the mailto; maybe that's a little tweak that would help). In any case, if it's a mailto link, the button description should be clearer: say, "Open draft email to OTRS in your email". Rd232 (talk) 22:28, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Incidentally, I've just searched Bugzilla and can't find anything about permitting zipped downloads of multiple files. However, thinking about, what you really want is not so much a massive archive file, as a stream of downloads of the selected files. Can the API do downloads? If so, presumably the script could in theory build a queue of downloads. (If it did so, it would probably need to download the associated file description pages as well, as HTML files, for licensing reasons.) Rd232 (talk) 22:36, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
