Hello, Nick Moyes!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:EmileRey.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I don't understand

[edit]

Greetings: I do not understand your continued claims of lack of notification, please see https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Philmonte101&action=history where all notifications to Philmonte101 are archived. If you have complaints about myself or Didym it would be better to directly address us rather than leaving accusatory messages on en:wiki talk pages as this one [1]. Cheers. Wikipedia principles.jpg deletion

[edit]

Can the owner of an image use that in Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Collegando (talk • contribs)

Hey, Collegando. I'm clearly no expert on image use, as you'll see from the above that some of my own images have previously been deleted by zealous wikimedia volunteers. In general, so long as you own the photo (ie you took it), it doesn't contain copyrighted content (images or text) and it doesn't infringe country laws (like Freedom of Panorama/artists' rights etc), you may upload an image here with an appropriate licence and then insert it into Wikipedia pages. Does that help you? Nick Moyes (talk) 10:09, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, mate.

Nick you are a Mensch. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_User:AWCzarnik Imagine trying to learn French in Paris proper, dealing with civil servants. That's how it feels to me slogging through the (no doubt necessary) rulebook for WP Editors. I wish those of us who weren't born with smartphones in our hands could be accepted if using interpreters.  :{) AWCzarnik (talk) 11:59, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just give me a shout on my Wikipedia talk page (rather than here) should you ever need a bit of general advice. I'm no chemist, but i do have a science background, and a strong interest in supporting editors who are experts in a scientific field who struggle with the annoying rules and funny ways we have of doing things here. With nearly 6 million articles, a few rules really are needed sometimes. We just like to make 'em complicated! lol Nick Moyes (talk) 13:10, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
