I uploaded a new version of File:Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries_results,_2016.svg, following discussion at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Graphics_Lab/Map_workshop#Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries.2C_2016 . Then I saw your instruction "Please discuss before changing." I apologise, I failed to do that. But I am willing to discuss, and to self-revert. Maproom (talk) 19:21, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Maproom: I agree it can be confusing for some. I think there should be some sort of note stating that the world map signifies the Democrats Abroad primary and not the entire world. MB298 (talk) 19:28, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
- So what do you think I should do? I am not American, and have little understanding of how primaries work. If you would like me to change the text within the SVG, I can easily do so. And I can make the box bigger, to hold more text. Maproom (talk) 20:46, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

File:US House 2015 with delegates.svg had the red/blue backwards, making it look like the Democrats controlled the House. Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Kingofthedead,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:45, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi MB298. Would you mind if I overwrite your File:Green Party presidential primaries results, 2016.svg? I'd like to suggest a new color scheme for the whole Green primary series. Copvios
It would seem you have uploaded a lot of images that have eventually been deemed to be copyright violations. It's time to stop uploading ineligible images and do things the right way, don't you think? These copyvios put Wikipedia and and Wikimedia Commons in a recarious position in addition to being a time-sink for other editors. Please be much more careful and policy-aware in the future. If the uploading of copyvios doesn't stop right away, you're risking a block. Capisce? Winkelvi (talk) 21:54, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Winkelvi: Completely agreed. I will try to be more aware in the future. MB298 (talk) 21:55, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- You've been here nearly 18 months. Such a thing should already be on your radar considering the number of uploads you've done.. "Try" isn't going to be good enough. Doing it is easy and making it happen is imperative. A newbie can say, "I'll try"; someone with as much time here as you have should be saying, "I will do it", period. Congratulations, Dear license reviewer
Hi MB298, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:
- importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
- importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.
Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.freenode.net. You can also add {{User license reviewer}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! --Lewis Hulbert (talk) 14:34, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
What are you doing?
You just reverted a substantial portion of my contributions to Commons without any discussion. As Winklevi pointed out above, you should know better. Disruptive and uncivil conduct is not tolerated on Wikipedia, Commons, or the other Wikimedia Foundation projects. --Coolcaesar (talk) 23:51, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Coolcaesar: I reverted them because you were overwriting the files with completely different files, see COM:OVERWRITE. Please upload those files separately instead of overwriting them. MB298 (talk) 23:53, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- So just because Winklevi reminds you to comply with Commons policy, you suddenly decided to go around strictly enforcing it against other editors without any warning or discussion? Do you even realize how vindictive that is? --Coolcaesar (talk) 00:04, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Coolcaesar: @Magog the Ogre: Magog, I'm pinging you because I noticed on File:Interstate5incentralvalley.jpg, which was originally taken in 2004 and Coolcaesar updated the file to a more recent, 2016 picture (you reverted it). Coolcaesar, since often this indicates a pattern, I looked through your contributions and found that many of your uploads included overwrites of perfectly good (a few years old, but still perfectly good) files. I was not even thinking of the Winkelvi message above when this occurred, given the fact that the message was left over a month ago. Hope this explains a bit more. MB298 (talk) 00:08, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- also, Winkelvi warned me to stop it with copyvios. Since then, I have been extremely cautious when transferring images from Flickr. Nowhere did Winkelvi state anything about any other type of Commons policy. MB298 (talk) 00:23, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- From my own point of view, MB298 haven't engaged in any disruptive nor uncivil conduct here. Coolcaesar, MB298 is right in reverting your overwrites. If you haven't read yet the guideline, see COM:OVERWRITE. What you should have done is to upload the new versions as new files instead of using ad hominem. And I can't see any connection of the copyvio warning of Winkelvi to this discussion. In fact, MB298's uploading of copyvios last month was a mistake and they became careful in uploading Flickr images (they are also a license reviewer here). Coolcaesar, consider this as a warning. Thanks, ★ Poké95 00:42, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- Once we allow the angry mastadons to cool down, I think we can point out that Coolcaesar was in fact making a mistake and it is common practice to revert this type of error. We all made mistakes when we started, so I'm sure it wasn't intentional and he will know in the future. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:43, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the fault for this train wreck lies with the Commons community, which developed that poorly-thought-out guideline without bothering with the basic courtesy of notifying the Wikipedia community on the village pump(s), the Signpost, etc. It must have occurred relatively recently, since I have been editing Wikipedia since 2005. As a result, we are talking about 20 to 25 photos that would have to be uploaded again. Because I don't have much time to edit Wikipedia at the moment, and I have higher Wikipedia editing priorities (e.g., the University of California article), it is going to take over two years to spend over 50 hours tracing my own edits, recovering the original descriptions, uploading the new versions through Commons' incredibly bad user interface (Commons should have stuck with the perfectly good basic MediaWiki interface) and updating the relevant English Wikipedia articles to point to the new filenames.
- It is precisely is because of disastrous developments like this that Wikipedia's editor population has been stagnating, because editors have better things to do than upload files they already uploaded. The Wikimedia Foundation really needs to develop a universal notification mechanism across all projects of information which is of importance to all projects. It makes zero sense to have a guideline allowing for the preservation of poor-quality photographs when higher-quality photographs are available, and which forces editors on all Wikipedia projects to manually scour the other Wikipedia projects and Commons on a regular basis for such updated higher-quality photographs (when they could be easily propagated to all projects through a Commons overwrite). For example, I strongly doubt that any Wikipedia editor actually intends to discuss the evolution of the Alameda Avenue gates of the Walt Disney Studios in any body of any article (the only logical reason for which one would need to transclude the old and new photographs into Wikipedia for side-by-side comparison). --Coolcaesar (talk) 05:41, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
- Another point: I finally found the time to upload a few of the photos you reverted without warning, and as I anticipated, it is turning into a time-consuming mess. Which means it's going to take a while to fix because I don't have the time to track down the correct descriptions for and re-upload all 20 photos at once and fix all the relevant English Wikipedia articles. (I actually treat photography as a serious hobby, which means I take over 20,000 photographs per year.)
- For one thing, if you're going to countermand my overwrites, the least you could have done (as a matter of common decency and courtesy) is rollback the photograph descriptions as well to the previous versions, so they're consistent. I also note for the record that you never bothered to apologize. At least I have the courtesy to do so. Always. --Coolcaesar (talk) 05:56, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

- also, Winkelvi warned me to stop it with copyvios. Since then, I have been extremely cautious when transferring images from Flickr. Nowhere did Winkelvi state anything about any other type of Commons policy. MB298 (talk) 00:23, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- So just because Winklevi reminds you to comply with Commons policy, you suddenly decided to go around strictly enforcing it against other editors without any warning or discussion? Do you even realize how vindictive that is? --Coolcaesar (talk) 00:04, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
False Deletion of an Image
Hello, you deleted a file I added (Frankie Boyle.png) saying the content was uploaded without the appropriate license. This content is clearly licensed CC BY 2.0 and this was given as a valid license option when I uploaded the file to the Wiki Commons. Can you explain why you still deleted it? It seems like you didn't even bother to check. The previous complaint about the image was retracted and rightly so. --Melonbob (talk) 04:25, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Melonbob: The image was under a valid license, however under Commons' minimal use policy you can show the full image, but can't use the copyrighted TV screen to display the subject of the photo. You could easily re-upload it showing the actual image of Boyle instead of the TV capture. MB298 (talk) 04:26, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hmm okay, I can understand that. I didn't think it would be an issue in this particular case but I can see how a crop like that could be abused to slip by unlicensed material. --Melonbob (talk) 04:45, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:March against Trump, New York City (30950458195).jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.

Hi MB298, thank you for your contributions and uploads! Copyright status: File:Jim Justice being sworn in as Governor of West Virginia.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Jim Justice being sworn in as Governor of West Virginia.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

I'm not sure if you did that to others, but please refrain from doing it again in the future, and would hope you would agree to speedy delete that photo. Also, if you could allow me a grace period to upload my own crops of my photos, I'd appreciate that as well. As of now, I feel I have to race as fast as possible to get the photos over to Wikipedia before someone else does it. Gage (talk) 12:54, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Gage: I've tagged it for speedy deletion. That is the only one of yours I recall cropping from an out-of-focus image. I have, however, uploaded several crops from CPAC 2017 but will refrain from doing so until you get around to it. MB298 (talk) 00:17, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- I've largely been able to accomplish uploading of crops. If there's anything else you think would be useful to crop, go for it. Gage (talk) 05:15, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

File:Luther Strange official portrait.jpg source
MB298, what's your opinion on the source for File:Luther Strange official portrait.jpg? Personally, I'm tempted to nominate it because the website can say they received it from his office, but how do we really know that? Even if they did receive it from his office, the senate website would at least have the picture updated and/or we would be able to find somewhere else (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, another news story). Thoughts? Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 01:59, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
- Well, never mind... They are using that picture here. Maybe we should update the source to a more reliable one? Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 02:02, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
@Corkythehornetfan: I'd go for it. A simple Google image search turns up no results except for Wikipedia and the article. EXIF gives no author (it usually credits "U.S. Senate Photographic Studio" or something similar, generally including the author); and the camera model (Canon EOS-1D X Mark II) is different from the one used for other recent Senate photos (using a Nikon camera). That being said, Congress isn't very good about updating the members' websites (especially regarding official photos). It may be a Senate photo, but we can't know for sure until it shows up on a congressional website, if it does it can be easily reuploaded. MB298 (talk) 02:15, 30 March 2017 (UTC)well, that was a waste of an explanation– yeah, I'd just update the source. MB298 (talk) 02:15, 30 March 2017 (UTC)- Thanks for the help. Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Kingofthedead,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
--Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 08:42, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Paris protest category move
Hi - I'd intended Category:Paris Agreement withdrawal protest to be for any images related to protests of the Paris Agreement withdrawal, not just for the DC protest. (There were protests in NYC and elsewhere as well.) I should have made the category title plural to make that clear. The images in there now were originally just put into Category:Protests against Donald Trump, so I created a more suitable sub-category. Funcrunch (talk) 13:27, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- Template:Ping I'll create a new category to encompass all the protests while leaving the specific one for the DC protest. MB298 (talk) 20:18, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Greg Gianforte and Karen Handel Portrait Requests
I noticed that you uploaded a picture of Nevada Congresswoman Jacky Rosen from Find Your Representative page on the House website. Do you think you could duplicate what you did for two other members of the House of Representatives: Greg Gianforte of Montana and Karen Handel of Georgia. I have used your method and have their images from the Find Your Representative page. Do you think you could upload the images? This is for Gianforte's page: https://ziplook.house.gov/htbin/findrep?ZIP=59715 This is for Handel's page: https://ziplook.house.gov/htbin/findrep?ZIP=30022 Thank you very much for your contributions!
