Copyright law does not include national emblems which include militaria of a Nation
[edit]maybe this will be helpful: The use of national emblems is typically subject to certain restrictions outside the scope of copyright law designed to prevent disparaging or confusing uses and to avoid misrepresentations. Using a national emblem in a context where the display of the emblem might be construed to falsely imply an official endorsement is also generally forbidden. Any such usage restrictions are beyond copyright law, though. They are designed to prevent fraudulent abuses of emblems, in particular to prevent using them to imply an affiliation with or an endorsement by an official body when there is no such affiliation or endorsement. Merely showing such emblems (for instance, in a Wikipedia article) is, in our understanding, not subject to such emblem or insignia laws.
- @Caracal Rooikat: That would be enough for them to uploaded as fair use on the English Wikipedia, but on commons realistically you will need proof that the exception extends to South Africa. It may be a moot point, though since all of the WWII insignia and earlier is obviously over 50 years old. For example, per the Copyright Act of 1978, the SA government holds copyright on the national coat of arms (see this statement, and on English Wikipedia therefore the file is fair use. Copyright status: File:Henry Bachtold.JPG
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Henry Bachtold.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File source is not properly indicated: File:Мikhail Grigoryevich Solovyov.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Мikhail Grigoryevich Solovyov.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
[[:File:Мikhail Grigoryevich Solovyov.jpg]] ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:57, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]
Hi Kges1901, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

[edit]Hi. I am trying to process File:Defense.gov News Photo 071217-N-4294K-008.jpg but it looks like this file is better than File:USN E-2C Scewtops.jpg - can you confirm that you want this to be overwritten? Gbawden (talk) 08:03, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
- and File:Defense.gov News Photo 071217-N-4294K-008.jpg appears to be better than Screwtops Gbawden (talk) 08:06, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Gbawden: I am not really well versed in the technical aspects of image quality, so can you explain why exactly File:Defense.gov News Photo 071217-N-4294K-008.jpg is better? It would appear to be the same as the original version of Screwtops from 2008, and if you think it is better the changes to Screwtops can simply be reverted, and the duplicates merged. I am just trying to avoid having the US military categories cluttered with duplicates. Kges1901 (talk) 11:09, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
- I appreciate you cleaning up the duplicates. File:Defense.gov News Photo 071217-N-4294K-008.jpg is a larger resolution (2100x1500) than the other. I would have thought that was the better quality image. Gbawden (talk) 12:43, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Gettysburg photos
[edit]Thank you for the work you are doing with the Gettysburg photos! One thing, when you add a category that is under the general one, I don't think it is necessary to delete the general one - I think a bot comes through and does that. That might save you a little time. Bubba73 (talk) 22:51, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Soyuzfoto
[edit]Soyuzfoto was established by TASS indeed, but it was separate organization (joint-stock company) de-jure (compared to LenTASS), so it is unclear - Soyuzfoto was or was not part of TASS copyright regulation. I will try to look in Soyuzfoto's memorandum of association. Alex Spade (talk) 10:55, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
Alex Spade (talk) 16:41, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
Kges1901 (talk) 16:48, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
Kges1901 (talk) 23:44, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
Alex Spade (talk) 07:23, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

MasterRus21thCentury (talk) 06:37, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
Kges1901 (talk) 04:15, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Website glitch
[edit]While looking up a photo of Tamaraxonim I discovered a glitch in the website russiainphoto.ru, a website which you have uploaded photo(s) from. The link of a photo from the search results will change over time to different photos, meaning that the link in the photo is often to a different one after is it uploaded. You did this in File:На улице Самарканда.jpg. Please take care to post the stable link in the source part instead of the unstable search results link. The links should look like this: https://russiainphoto.ru/photos/21083/ for File:Петросян Тамара Артемовна.jpg instead of https://russiainphoto.ru/search/photo/?author_ids=319&index=7&page=1&paginate_page=1. Please self-correct if you can. - HistoryofUzbekistan (talk) 13:57, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
