Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:54, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

File:Lutetia closest approach (Rosetta).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File tagging File:HD 85512 b.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:HD 85512 b.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Edit which is close to vandalism
[edit]This edit by yourself is very close to vandalism. Now, listen, I know that you are experiencing some serious butthurt over the existence of Polandball on Wikipedia projects, but when that butthurt almost crosses the line into vandalism, this is absolutely not on. Don't do such things again. russavia (talk) 16:26, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi there, I'm not sure if you are aware, but several months ago I managed to get Platforma to relicence their Flickr stream to Commons compatible CC licence. This took me almost 12 months of hounding them to do so, so I think I did pretty well with this, don't you?
Anyway, there are 1,500 images in Category:Photographs by Platforma Obywatelska (check needed) which need categorisation. I am not full bottle on Platforma politicians, and their descriptions are almost entirely in Polish. Perhaps you would like to take some time out of talking shit about me on other projects, and jump in and help to categorise these valuable Polish images. When categorised the "check needed" category can safely be removed from each image.
You may like to let other likeminded editors such as yourself to also stop talking shit about me, and ask them to pitch in and help with this. I am actively lobbying other Polish organisations and photographers to relicence their works for use on Commons.
Regards, russavia (talk) 12:38, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
P.S. I have also managed to obtain a photograph of the LOT 767 belly landing as described in pl:Awaryjne lądowanie lotu PLL LOT 016 under a free licence, but I am not rushing to upload it and make it available on Commons. To be perfectly honest, I feel that so long as people such as yourself continue to talk smack about me unabated that I am not going to reward such blatant idiocy by uploading one of the most needed photos as it pertains to Polish aviation. Such a shame. Grow the hell up.
- Further to your comments on my talk page, if you think I should be globally banned, then go ahead and start a discussion on Meta and have it done. I don't think I can say it any clearer -- put up or shut up. russavia (talk) 14:10, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution.
Hi John Belushi,
You seem to have overwritten the original image by Jacob van Liesvelt from 1526 by a newer, slightly more recent image.
Different images should be uploaded as separate files, not as a "new version" of another image. Also, what was your source for this image? I am handling a complaint by a website now through OTRS, who claim they want to be mentioned as the source. Please supply the correct source, or I will have to take down your upload. Ciell (talk) 17:54, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Please read Commons:OVERWRITE. Ciell (talk) 14:37, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
I am wondering about the source of this image. It says it is from enwiki, but the deletion log says the image was deleted for not being free or fair use. I also couldn't find any connection with en:user:Friendlystar to this image. Do you have any insight about where this image came from? --Lasunncty (talk) 23:21, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
- did you ever hear anything about this? I am wondering the validity of this pic as well! 96.60.194.4 16:13, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
