Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:35, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

- Guanaco, admittedly I am all thumbs when it comes to uploading images belong to others. I don't know the proper hoops to jump through or even the proper licenses to assign. One thing I am aware of is that I need permission from the owner, and I got that permission from Statistics Canada in this regard via email. Is it possible to walk me through the proper process step-by-step to fix rather than this be potentially deleted speedily when in fact deletion may not be necessary whatsoever? - On Commons, files that don't allow unrestricted modification are prohibited. To keep this image we would need a proper free license from Statistics Canada, and it sounds like that isn't possible. I recommend uploading this to the English Wikipedia instead, as a fair use image. Guanaco (talk) 22:34, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- Or if you'd like, I can handle the uploading over there. Guanaco (talk) 22:35, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Guanaco, if you could upload this to English Wikipedia instead as a fair use image on my behalf it be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 22:39, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- Will do. I'm working on extracting a higher quality version from the PDF as well, so it displays better in the infobox. Guanaco (talk) 22:44, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
