"in the Statens Museum for Kunst"

[edit]

As a native Danish speaker I really think category names like Category:Busts in the Statens Museum for Kunst is an abomination. Is there any chance all these categories could be changed back to Category:Busts in Statens Museum for Kunst? Hjart (talk) 10:35, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hjart: So that I understand, could you explain why that's such an undesirable construction? Is it that the definite article isn't used in the equivalent Danish construction? Is the definite article already implied in some way in the phrase "Statens Museum for Kunst"? (I will have articulated that poorly, but that is a phenomenon I'm familiar with from another language I speak, namely Welsh: our national museum is officially titled "Amgueddfa Cymru", including in English-language usage, but "the Amgueddfa Cymru" – on the pattern of "the Louvre", "the Rijksmuseum", etc. – would be very wrong as "Amgueddfa Cymru" translates to "the Museum of Wales", definite article and preposition and all. Is it anything like that for the SMK?) Ham II (talk) 11:24, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Statens Museum for Kunst" literally translates to "The [Danish] State's Museum of art". To native Danes like me "Busts in the Statens Museum for Kunst" reads like "Busts in the the State's Museum of art". Hjart (talk) 12:16, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation. I believe that all the recent categories in the Category:Collections of the Statens Museum for Kunst tree have been created by WLKBot, which is maintained by Kim Bach. This includes Category:Busts in the Statens Museum for Kunst, when Category:Busts in Statens Museum for Kunst (which I turned into a redirect) already existed. Category:Collections of the Statens Museum for Kunst itself was created by Rsteen. @Kim Bach and Rsteen: I understand from your user pages that you're both native Danish speakers. Would you agree with Hjart's view that "in Statens Museum for Kunst" (in English) is better than "in the Statens Museum for Kunst"? Ham II (talk) 14:00, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's worth noting that the subcategories of Category:Paintings in Denmark by museum generally do not follow the pattern of the Statens Museum for Kunst subcategories. Also when I was still fairly new to Commons I could probably have come up with something similar to "Busts in the Statens Museum for Kunst". Having gained quite a bit of experience since then, I have changed my views a bit and grown increasingly annoyed with constructs like that. Hjart (talk) 14:43, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. When I started submitting categories in this field many years ago, I also used the term "in Statens Museum for Kunst". But in 2023, when Statens Museum for Kunst started the (very recommendable) mass upload of files to Commons, they went for "in the Statens Museum for Kunst". I do not know if that is an official policy of the institution, Kim Bach will have to explain that. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 02:25, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When mapping the categories, I tried to map to existing categories, this is the reason for the inconsistency. Most of the existing categories were in the form ...in the Statens Museum for Kunst..., so I decided to make that the standard, I made the wrong choice it seems :-(.
Have I understood it correctly, it is a general problem with categories named ...in the Statens Museum for Kunst...
For instance Busts by ... in the Statens Museum for Kunst should be Busts by ... in Statens Museum for Kunst
We could of course do something about this, do anyone know of maintainer tools that could fix this, in the example with Busts ... in the ... we have a total of 95 artworks.
And I do, of course, have a complete list of the mapping from SMK object types
Along these lines. Note that the Commons Category for Drawings is correct. We add two categories for each object type, Object related and Artist related
Commons category (Object related)
SMK Object Type: Akvarel->Watercolor paintings in the Statens Museum for Kunst
Tegning->Drawings in Statens Museum for Kunst
Commons category (Artist related)
Paintings by xxxx (name) in the Statens Museum for Kunst
Drawings by xxxx (name) in the Statens Museum for Kunst
I could update the mapping table so that this error doesn't occur in the future Kim Bach (talk) 19:12, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kim Bach. Yes, you've understood correctly, although I'm taking all this on trust from Hjart. (Also pinging Rsteen so that everyone's in the loop.) I don't know of a tool for renaming such a large number of categories; perhaps it would be best to ask at Commons talk:Categories for discussion how best to do this? Ham II (talk) 20:22, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have posed the question thereː Commons talk:Categories for discussion#Tool for renaming large set of categories?. Hjart (talk) 08:49, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. The algorithm to do the renaming is not too complicated, and ChatGPT seems to generate useful code using this prompt:
can you generate a pywikibot script to rename categories and pages referring to the categories
Translated to pseudo code:
  • For Each Category in the mapping table containing category name (in this case "the Statens Museum for Kunst")
    • Rename category by moving it
    • Iterate all pages in the old categories
      • Change the old category to the new category
The above algorithm will have to be extended to handle the artist specific categories, for which I don't have a mapping table. I think this could be achieved by iterating over categories instead of pages.
Anyhow, I would be surprised if something along these lines hasn't been developed by someone else already. Kim Bach (talk) 16:48, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm running new batches where I have omitted the in "in the Statens Museum for Kunst", this will generate new categories, I'll look into consolidation of the data later Kim Bach (talk) 19:05, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep an eye on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/WLKBot :-) Kim Bach (talk) 15:37, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The batch has now run, all categories created by WLKBot has now been changed from "...in the Statens Museum for Kunst" to "...in Statens Museum for Kunst", I trust this is what you requested.
Some categories already existed, all images in these categories, has been updated to the new categories by the Bot.
What remains is a number of empty categories, and categories not created or used by the Bot. Kim Bach (talk) 12:08, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As you might know, I decided to have this rolled back, because, unfortunately, the roughly 3.200 new categories weren't moved from the "...in the..." categories, this has left a lot of empty categories with the "...in Statens...", I'll work on a better solution, or just rely on the crowd to eventually fix this Kim Bach (talk) 11:36, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kim Bach: Thank you for your work on this. I have previously started to turn subcategories of Category:Busts in Statens Museum for Kunst with "in the SMK" into redirects to their equivalents with "in SMK", but only got up to the letter C; there are 40 of those left to do. Nominating them at COM:CFD, which has a waiting time of at least two weeks, seems at least as cumbersome as turning them into redirects myself, so I will try and do some more.

Category:Sculptures by Carl Aarsleff in the Statens Museum for Kunst is an example of a category I have moved. To do this I moved all the files in that category to Category:Sculptures by Carl Aarsleff in Statens Museum for Kunst and changed the text in the first category's edit window to {{category redirect|Category:Sculptures by Carl Aarsleff in Statens Museum for Kunst}}. @Hjart, Rsteen, and Kim Bach: Would you be willing to do the equivalent of this for other categories, for instance subcategories of Category:Paintings in Statens Museum for Kunst? Ham II (talk) 06:55, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That is the method I had automated, unfortunately I forgot to create category redirects, leaving some 3,200 “…in…” categories unconnected, I did Update the categories on some 35,000 pages (basically all media from SMK!), but I ended up requesting a rollback, so now we have 3,200 stranded “…in…” categories.
Here’s What I’m contemplating to code:
for each “….in the…” categoties:
for each page “….in the…” category:
if “…in…” category does not exist:
save name of “…in…” category
create “…in…” category
update page replacing “…in the…” with “…in…” category
change “…in the..” to a category redirect to the “…in…” category
Kim Bach (talk) 07:20, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Thanks for your efforts. Doing a bit every day in relation to prints, drawings and paintings by Danish artists. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 07:21, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've done the same for a number of categories already.
What I would like too is to have the link Statens Museum for Kunst integrated into each of those categories and have that gallery developed into a navigational tool within this quite deep and complex category tree. Hjart (talk) 08:41, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another possibility would be to devise an algorithm that only changes all the "...in the Statens Museum for Kunst" to category redirects to "...in the Statens Museum for Kunst".
This has the advantage that it only needs to update the approx. 3,000 "...in the Statens Museum for Kunst" categories, eliminating the need to update 35,000+ pages.
I'm not sure this algorithm would yield the correct result, but is much simpler and less risky, and we already have the "...in Statens Museum for Kunst" categories created:
For Each Category Name Ending In "...in the Statens Museum for Kunst":
If Category Name Ending In "...in Statens Museum for Kunst" Does Not Exist:
Create Category Page Ending In "...in Statens Museum for Kunst"
Change Category Page To A Category Redirect to Category Name Ending In "in Statens Museum for Kunst" Instead Of Category Name Ending In "in the Statens Museum for Kunst"
Kim Bach (talk) 04:28, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kim Bach, Rsteen, and Hjart: Thanks all. Kim Bach, are you happy to make the changes you have suggested with WLKBot? Ham II (talk) 06:00, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=National_Gallery%2C_London&diff=906138116&oldid=880182666 could you please explain gordon 1981 and why it has to be shown on the gallery page Oursana (talk) 14:05, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Oursana: That's meant to link to an item (currently the only item) in the bibliography, but the link doesn't work. The book is about 100 highlights of the National Gallery's collection, as selected by Dillian Gordon. My idea is to make the gallery page National Gallery, London an aggregate of different lists of highlights, which means that there needs to be a way of marking which lists include which artworks. I would be willing to consider footnotes as another way of doing this.
This is an offshoot of the discussion en:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/100 great paintings from Duccio to Picasso at English Wikipedia, where I argued for deletion of the article on Gordon's book. I felt that one of the many souvenir guides published by the gallery over the years isn't notable enough a topic for an encyclopaedia article (although it was kept in the end because some reviews of it were found). Other users felt that it was a useful list and should be kept; I think its contents are worth recording, but on the Commons gallery and on Wikidata rather than Wikipedia. Ham II (talk) 14:57, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, so we just leave it as it is and you think of a better solution. Marking with bold text or a red star would be also possible and the reference could be given at the subject/ and or in a list.Oursana (talk) 15:05, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.
