[edit]Hi! Thank you for taking over the VICbot! There are however some bugs with the notification in my talk (same in others). Sorry if you had already noticed this! Thanks! --Jaqen (talk) 09:37, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- Jaqen, oh shoot - that wasn't actually supposed to run! I must have forgotten to add the "do not make changes" option...oops. Well, guess it's time to start fixing bugs! GeneralNotability (talk) 13:46, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
VI nom withdrawn, but it was promoted. Rodhullandemu (talk) 07:58, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
- Rodhullandemu, acknowledged, thanks. I'll look into it and see if I can figure out what went wrong. GeneralNotability (talk) 04:19, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
OutThere_magazine.jpg
[edit]Hi GeneralNotability. I noted you marked my image for speedy deletion. Thanks for your vigilance in helping keep copyrights safe, but this is my work. Let me explain. I am a subscriber to this magazine and collect them. I am also an amateur still-life photographer. I photographed these magazines for my own amusement and put them on social media and the magazine liked them and asked if they could use them. I received no compensation and have no affiliation to the magazine. So the picture you see here is my work, although the magazine cover featured in it is someone else's – who I have credited (Martin Perry) just in case. Basically, I took a picture of a stack of magazines so the copyright of this picture is mine, but I still credited the author of the magazine cover. I used to work as a Picture Editor, so I'm very aware of copyrights. I hope this reverts your decision? I'm new to Wikipedia, but I don't believe I've done anything wrong? The Cleaning Laddy (talk) 18:04, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- The Cleaning Laddy, I'll be honest - that's a fairly complicated copyright situation. I'll take your word that you took the picture (if that's the case, you can prove ownership by contacting our volunteer-response email address), but even then the picture substantially contains someone else's copyrighted work (whoever took the pictures on the magazines), so I don't think you can claim it as "own work" and license it as you did. I'm going to talk to a couple of the local admins who are more knowledgeable about copyright than I am and see what they think. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:37, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- The friendly neighborhood admin pointed me at this section. Basically, since the picture you took was focused on someone else's copyrighted work, it's considered a derivative work, and so isn't allowed on Commons (which only permits freely-licensed material). Theoretically, the copyright holder of the magazine cover art (either the magazine's publisher or the cover photographer, depending on the nature of the contract) could contact us to release the cover under an appropriate license but I'm not especially clear on how that works with derivative works. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:51, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- GeneralNotability Thank you. It is a grey area in print publishing too, but generally accepted if the item is not tampered with. Fair enough. I could ask the magazine, I guess. But then them uploading a picture of the cover to my article about the magazine/publisher would be considered a COI, correct? Hurdles, hurdles... The Cleaning Laddy (talk) 15:25, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- The Cleaning Laddy, if you ask them to upload a picture to Commons (and emailing our volunteer response team to confirm their release) and they do so, that isn't itself a COI problem. GeneralNotability (talk) 22:32, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

VIC promotions
[edit]Hi, some backlog seems to have developed. Is this still operating? Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 18:56, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- Rodhullandemu, it should be...I've definitely been getting daily "job started" emails about it. I will try to look into it this weekend. GeneralNotability (talk) 18:58, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
- Rodhullandemu, turned out to be pretty easy...my code assumed that user signatures would always contain
User:(username)
, with that capitalization, but someone had a signature likeuser:(username)
, which caused an error since I wasn't correctly handling the situation where it fails to find a username. Fixed, thanks for letting me know about this. GeneralNotability (talk) 23:54, 23 April 2021 (UTC)- Thanks. I was wondering. Rodhullandemu (talk) 06:39, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Seems promoted images are not being processed. Is there a problem? Rodhullandemu (talk) 19:27, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- Rodhullandemu there was indeed (boneheaded mistake on my part made it fail when someone added a stray space in the "VICs" template). Resolved and running now, thanks for letting me know. GeneralNotability (talk) 23:34, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! Rodhullandemu (talk) 08:56, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
My picture
[edit]Hello, I already gave proof that this picture is my property. I did it via email. Thank you!

VICBot2 is in a loop?
[edit]Hi there! For some strange reason, your bot is promoting this photo to Valued Image multiple times. It's a good thing to check if the {{VI}} template is already present to avoid re-adding it. Regards, —capmo (talk) 14:50, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- capmo, I see the problem...sigh...yet another case of me making bad assumptions about how people format things :) I've started refactoring that part of the bot to use a better parser. Will do a test run shortly to keep an eye on it - hopefully this will fix the problem, though it might promote one more time before it's fixed. GeneralNotability (talk) 16:46, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
VICBot2 has closed VI voting too quickly for File:Mainau, Schlosskirche (1991-05-20 Sp).jpg
[edit]Hello General:
This image was just nominated for VI on May 26, 2022; received one support vote and has now been closed for voting by VICBot2.
This seems incorrect as nominations can be closed after a period of 4 or 7 days if more than 48 hours have passed since the last vote.
Can you look into this and comment?
Best, Gordon
Dear GeneralNotability and dear colleagues,
apparently the VIC bot has a problem with the correct processing of newly promoted VI candidates. Since a few days the page of recently promoted VIs remains empty, and instead the bot creates one and the same assessment field multiple times, as can be seen from this example.
I don't know if there is a connection to the galleries, which are quite crowded by now. For those, there is a risk that the error Unstrip size limit exceeded will occur in the foreseeable future. It mainly affects the following VI galleries:
- …/Places/Buildings/Religious buildings and shrines (approx. 2000 images)
- …/Works of art/Paintings and pictorial arts (approx. 1500 images)
- …/Life forms/Animals/Molluscs (approx. 1500 images)
- …/Works of art/Statues, monuments and plaques (approx. 1400 images)
- …/Life forms/Animals/Arthropods/Butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) (approx. 1200 images)
- …/Life forms/Plants/Seed plants (Spermatophyta)/Flowering plants (approx. 1000 images)
- …/Places/Buildings/Other (approx. 950 images)
- …/Objects/Transport and vehicles/Automobiles (approx. 850 images)
Perhaps archives like those found in the QI galleries should be established (Example). Although this was meant to be a temporary solution, it was the only one available at that time. This proposal is intended for experienced colleagues who are familiar with the creation of archive structures. If the beginning is made, it is easier to extend and maintain the archives later.
Many thanks in advance for your help, cooperation and assistance, -- Radomianin (talk) 08:52, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- Update: It seems that last night, after four days, the bot started working again as usual and moved the promoted images to the sorting gallery. Thanks a lot for your action, GeneralNotability. Best, -- Radomianin (talk) 05:05, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Radomianin, yeah, I think there were some problems with Toolforge that made the bot stop running after promoting but before removing the entries. I'll keep an eye out in case the issues happen again. GeneralNotability (talk) 20:00, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Dear GeneralNotability, unfortunately I have only a poor, rudimentary knowledge of complex program structures such as those on Toolforge. Therefore, I thank you very much for your watchful eye in this matter :) Best, -- Radomianin (talk) 06:42, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Pages too big
[edit]Hi Your bot keeps on adding files to Commons:Valued images by topic/Works of art/Statues, monuments and plaques, but the page got too big, no longer renders correctly and ended up in Category:Pages with too many expensive parser function calls. It might be time to split it. Same with:
- Commons:Valued images by topic/Objects/Transport and vehicles/Automobiles
- Commons:Valued images by topic/Places/Buildings/Religious buildings and shrines
- Commons:Valued images by topic/Works of art/Paintings and pictorial arts

Duplicate promotions.
[edit]See File:Koyaike_Park_from_airplane_window.jpg and File:Bales_of_PET_bottles_closeup.jpg. I was notified twice, and the assessment template was placed on each file page twice. grendel|khan 09:39, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- I see it - the problem was an equals in an image name on the recently-promoted page, which broke template parsing. See what I did in Special:Diff/864892104 to fix the issue. I've added code to not die in this situation and re-run the bot, there's probably one round of extra notifications going out and then it should all be solved. I'll go through and remove the duplicate VI tags. GeneralNotability (talk) 01:01, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- Sincere thanks, I have spent a lot of time trying to understand the origin of the malfunction over the past few days. I corrected what I could manually. Your intervention saves us. . --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 04:35, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
