Chmehl 15:38, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Schau mal da rein Commons:Meet our photographers, da hab ich mal alles zusammengeschrieben was ich an Equipment benutze. Wie heißt du eigentlich? --Makro Freak talk 18:08, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Apropos, demnaechst soll Hugin 0.7.0 rauskommen ;-) -- Klaus with K 20:55, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
-- Chmehl 07:52, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
-- Klaus with K 10:55, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Use of Photo
[edit]Dear Christian,
My name is Bernadette Simpson and I am writing to you to tell you about a project I am working on. I am a teacher and have been living and teaching in Egypt for almost ten years now. Currently, I am working on a children's book about Egypt. The book is written in English and is intended not only for the millions of school children in Egypt who are learning English but also for travelers, young and old, who have special memories of their time in Egypt and for children around the world who wish to learn more about modern day Egypt.
I plan on self publishing - that is, paying for the printing and doing all the marketing, etc. by myself. As you may imagine, this is quite an undertaking. The book contains many beautiful photographs of life in Egypt. I took as many of the photos as I could myself but I would not have been able to complete my project without the contributions of photographers like yourself who have shared their work under the Creative Commons Attribution licenses. I am immensely grateful for these generous artists!
I hope to use the photo Great Egret, Egretta alba that you have posted. You have captured a fantastic image of a bird common to Egypt! I am writing to check with you that you are agreeable to sharing this photo with me for my book. If you can send me contact information and once my editing is complete, I will send you digital files of the page your photo appears on, as well as other pages that may be relevant, including the credits page.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Bernadette bernadmovies@yahoo.co.uk

Permission to use picture?
[edit]Hello Christian: I have a blog about cats, and I recently needed to use a picture of a lionfish to show their similarity to cat whiskers. I found your photo of a lionfish on Wikimedia Commons -- it is such a great photo! I have linked to the photo on Wikimedia -- please take a look and make sure I have provided the proper attribution for your Creative Commons license: http://lovethosekitties.blogspot.com/2014/03/adorable-long-whiskered-kitty.html. If you would like any change in the attribution, etc., please let me know. Sincerely, Cathryn Chaney, cathrynmchaney "at" gmail "dot" com
Hi Chmehl, I'm interested in resizing and using your picture of Turret Arch (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Turret_Arch_MC.jpg) (overlayed with some text) for a campaign to protect Red Rock country in Utah from Oil and Gas development. Would this be OK with you? The image would be used for a banner advertisement driving people to a petition page setup by a nonprofit conservation organization. Thanks!
- Feel free to use it. I would appreciate if you could send me the final banner via email since I am always curious how my pictures are used. Chmehl 05:49, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Here you go! http://www.therainforestsite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=4 If you don't see it at the bottom, try reloading the page. This ad has been enormously successful in generating petitions to save this land. Thanks!
- Thanks for the link! I like the banner :) Chmehl (talk) 21:27, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Hello Chmehl,
I'm also interested in using a photo of yours, "Budapest at Night From Gillert Hill."
I will be using it for my non-profit, free travel guide website BigBoyTravel.com. The site is new, but basically I use it in my free time to make free walking tours with maps for traveler to use.
The photo will be located at www.bigboytravel.com/europe/hungary/budapest[1], the page is under construction, however, I just loaded your image so you can get an idea of how it will be used. It is also linked back to your wiki user profile page, please let me know if another website would be better.
I believe I read you bought your first professional camera just 3 years ago, your photos are great and look better than most people's photo who have been do it their whole careers. Nice work.
Thank You,

[edit]Hi,
I've never taken the time to look carefully at your pictures. They are trully incredible. I remember that picture of SF seen through the golden bridge which didn't make it through to FP status (which I'm very sad about), and the many panoramas of many valley in US, but the rest is also superb I believe.
I nominated one of your picture on FPC, and will do so for several of them (not at same time ;) ).
Hope you'll keep contrbuting for long. Benh (talk) 22:03, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your words about my pictures. They keep me going! I have a lot of other pictures on my hard drive that just wait for being uploaded...
- I just had a look at your panoramas and I find the view over Paris and the Louvre pano truly superb. These pictures make me want to go to Paris some time.
- Thanks also for the nomination, let's see what the other users think! Chmehl (talk) 06:45, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. And thank you too :) In case you haven't seen, we are wondering if you could fix your picture (uneven sky and poterization). I think left part on the sky is darker and we can do nothing about it, but posterization needs a fix IMO. Benh (talk) 18:11, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
- And the shadow of the tripod on the left side is disturbing, too. Maybe you can fix this as well --Simonizer (talk) 22:47, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

- I uploaded a new version Image:Hooker Valley Pano MC edit1.jpg. I think the posterization should be better now but still not optimal. There is hardly anything I can do about the uneven sky. It is a very wide field of view and the sky just does not have the same color in all viewing directions. I think I shouldn't have used the polarizer when taking this image :( I also tried to brighten the sky a bit but this increases the posterization in the very fine color gradient of the sky. However, there is also good news: I was able to clone out the tripod :). What do you think of the new version? I could also supply you with the raw files if you want to give it a try. Chmehl (talk) 19:33, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hmmm. The new version is less sharp and little bit washed out --Simonizer (talk) 09:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- OK, I updated it again: Image:Hooker Valley Pano MC edit1.jpg. What do you think of this version? Chmehl (talk) 12:38, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, very good --Simonizer (talk) 15:51, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- OK, I nominated the edit as an alternative version. Chmehl (talk) 16:57, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again Christian, I was just wondering if you used any polarizer filter when taking this picture ? Thanks Benh (talk) 11:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I used a circular polarizer. Chmehl (talk) 12:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- This may explain the uneven sky (but I still agree that left part of the sky is darker). I read somewhere that using polarizer filters on multipictures panoramas is not recommended, but may be wrong (I've never tried). Benh (talk) 13:40, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I also think that the polarizer increased the effect of the uneven sky. Maybe I shouldn't have rotated the polarizer to the angle where the polarization effect is at its maximum. I think a few degrees before or after the maximum can still give you the deep blue sky and the richer and intenser look of the green. At the same time the sky would be more even. I will try to experiment a bit when I am going to the mountains this summer and let you know my results. Chmehl (talk) 14:05, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'd be very interested to know (I'm considering buying a circular polarizer filter, but since I take mostly multi pictures panoramas, I wonder if it will be a good investment). Thanks for your explanations :) Benh (talk) 14:56, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Christian,
I can't fault your image :) or maybe 50mpix was too much for me to scrutinize ? ;) Incredible pic ! Tonight, I'm going to close some FPC, but tomorrow, I think I'll nominate it.
I've set up a mediawiki at work. As far as I remember, there are two limits for the max size of a file that can be uploaded. One is for warning only, but the other is in the php code if I remember right. So I don't know any workaround for now. I'll have a check at work tomorrow.
Oh by the way, I've bought a circular polariser filter. B+W thing. I'm happy with it, results are incredible... I can't wait to visit Provence (in 2 weeks) to try it on great sceneries :). Now I think I understand why your sky was uneven on the Hooker valley pic. effect depends on the angle to the sun... the wider your field of view, the stronger the contrast. turning the polariser to minimize effect could help I think, but very little IMO. I already see the uneveness on a single shot at 10mm on my 400D. Do you agree ? -- Benh (talk) 22:11, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I can also see the uneveness in a single shot at 10mm. I think that on a clear day it might be better to take the picture without polarizer. When you have clouds on the sky (where the uneveness is also not that obvious) the polarizer makes an incredible difference---I love the contrast on the clouds that is generated by the polarizer :) --Chmehl ( ) 06:29, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- I wonder if there's an angle which would give consistent results across the horizontal field of view. I love the contrast between sky and clouds too :) My roomate and I found that shooting skies with the CP filters on sunsets make the clouds brighter than sky when they were actually darker. simply amazing ! Oops by the way, I forgot to check the mediawiki conf at work. I'll get back to you soon. Benh (talk) 10:17, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi again, I checked the MediaWiki setting at work. There are two ways of setting limits for file size that can be uploaded
- editing php.ini file
- setting $wgMaxUploadSize variable appropriatly on mediawiki (can't be > the one on php.ini).
There's also a $wgUploadSizeWarning which sets a limit above which only a warning is triggered.
Anyways there's not much one of us can do to change them :) Benh (talk) 08:19, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- OK, Thanks for the effort! Maybe at some time in the future I can upload the full resolution image... Chmehl (talk) 09:39, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Russian offices in Austria
[edit]Hi Christian, I have a somewhat unusual request for assistance which you may be able to help with, maybe not. On English Wikipedia, I am working on an article/list of Diplomatic missions of Russia, and subsidiary articles, and I am in need of photos of:
- Embassy of the Russian Federation in Austria, Reisnerstrasse 45-47, 1030, Wien
- Permanent mission of Russia to the OSCE and International Organisations, Erzherzog Karl Strasse 182, 1220, Wien
- Consulate-General of Russia in Salzburg, Bürglsteinstrasse 2, 5020, Salzburg
- Trade Representative of Russia in Austria, Argentinierstrasse 25-27, 1040, Wien
- Russian Cultural Institute, Brahmsplatz 8, 1040, Wien
Might you be in the position to be able to help with photos of these representations of Russia in Austria? Or perhaps you can point me towards someone who may be able to help with these photos? Any assistance you can give would be appreciated. Cheers --Russavia (talk) 04:28, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Russavia, I think I can help you with the four offices here in Vienna. I could do a tour this weekend and photograph them. The office in Salzburg is a bit difficult since I am not going there regularly. I will let you know once I have uploaded some images. Cheers --Chmehl (talk) 07:50, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Christian, thanks for your reply. Your help is appreciated, but there is no rush on this. I have added a link to the to embassy above, to show you a photo of what the embassy is. Apparently there is a Russian Orthodox Cathedral next door to the embassy, if you are able to get a pic of that also, it would be great. I will hunt for someone in Salzburg who may be able to get that one. Thanks again mate, cheers (Scotty) --Russavia (talk) 01:12, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi,
I wanted to nominate this beautiful pano of yours on FPC when I noticed some flare on the right side. Do you think you could remove them ? I think I could but prefer the author to do it so quality won't be affected at all. Thanks ! Benh (talk) 18:36, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Benh, do you mean the scattered light coming from the right side, similar as in Image:Jalovec northside MC.jpg? The scattered light reduces the contrast and I'm not sure how to remove this. Featured Picture template
[edit]Hi there. I thought you might find the following templates interesting.
This user took the featured photo [[{{{1}}}]]. |
With this template, you can show which Featured Pictures you have uploaded to Commons.
Alternatively, you can use this template:
This user has uploaded featured pictures on Commons. |
Here you can say exactly how many Featured Images you have uploaded to Commons. You simply add the number of uploaded FPs to the template.
I have also created two other templates for Valued and Quality images, which can be found here and here. What do you think? Could it catch on? Elucidate (talk) 14:54, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, that's certainly a nice and useful template. Thanks for implementing it. Do you now about an automatic way to count the number of featured pictures, quality pictures, etc... Chmehl (talk) 14:40, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- You mean by use of a graph and several image specific categories? Elucidate (parlez à moi) Ici pour humor 14:58, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- No, I mean something more sophisticated, like e.g. filtering all featured pictures by the username. I don't know how this could be implemented but maybe it is possible... Chmehl (talk) 20:06, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

- Hi, of course you can use the pictures. The license only requires some sort of attribution, like for example as you mentioned by placing my name in the corner of the image. Please use "Photo by Christian Mehlführer". It would also be nice if you put somewhere on your page a link to my user page here on Wikimedia Commons. --Chmehl (talk) 06:12, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hallo!
--Chmehl (talk) 05:07, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Use of your picture
[edit]Dear Christian,
I work for the french Museum of natural history. We are updating the multimedia devices in the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution and one of this device treats about the rainforest of South America. I'm looking for pictures and found your picture of Bradypus on Wikimedia :
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MC_Drei-Finger-Faultier.jpg
There are some stuffed specimens in the Gallery which represent the rainforest, and for every specimen we would like to show a picture of the animal in his natural area (picture attached). This is a non-commercial use, our purpose is to show how rainforests are threatened by human activities.
Do you agree if we use your picture in this device ? Of course your name will appear in the device.
We would be very pleased to invite you at the Grande galerie if you go to Paris once a time.
Thank you,
Best regards,

[edit]Hallo Chmehl,

Profile size and activity criterion for Commons:Meet our photographers
[edit]Dear member of Commons:Meet our photographers,
Two issues have recently been raised at Commons talk:Meet our photographers:
- Profile size creep
- The page is becoming increasing cluttered due to a tendency among some members to make personal profiles, which are unreasonably large. You are kindly requested to consider the size used by your profile and consider if it has a reasonable size. Note that the same message is being send to all members, so it is up to you to use your own good judgement in this. We are not interesting in setting up exact quantitatve rules. It should be a matter of common sense.
- Activity criterion
- It has been suggested to introduce an activity criterion in addition to the minimum 10 FPs criterion to be included on the list. You are kindly requested to voice your opinion on this proposal.

Zur Informationen
[edit]Hallo Christian,
- Chmehl (talk) 07:51, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- Danke nochmal!
- Viele Grüße, Marco

May we have permission to use the following attribution when displaying your photos on our website, www.LightfortheDay.com: "Photo courtesy of Christian Mehlführer, Wikimedia Commons" The more I read the full texts of the licenses, it becomes unclear whether we have to have links and references to licenses in our caption, which we generally do not have. - Hi, thanks for letting me know. The attribution is absolutely fine. Kind regards, Chmehl (talk) 21:35, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hi again :) In the meantime the game has grown and changed a lot. I wanted to make sure you were still ok with me using the picture. Also, because I want to make sure there's no misunderstanding, you are the original photographer correct? It sometimes happens that another person simply takes a picture from somebody else and uploads it to wikipedia with a license to distribute. Seems very unlikely, but I just want to make sure.
- There is more information on the game here, including a short video that tells a little bit about the background: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/238178285/animalalbum
- I also have a demo version of the game available so you can see for yourself in what way the pictures are presented: http://dromedarydreams.com/index/demo/0-8
- Please let me know if I have your permission, if the picture is yours and if you want a different attribution.

Permission and how to credit
[edit]Hello Christian
We would like to use your great pic http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Budapest_from_Gellert_Hill_MC.jpg on the journal page where we invite people to our conference in Budapest in our quarterly journal called "360° - the Business Transformation Journal", details see below (to be published next Monday, if all runs smoothly).
Is that ok? and if yes, could you please specify how exactly to reference your work in the picture credits.
Some background info: The Business Transformation Academy (BTA) is a non-profit inter- and transdisciplinary network and association supported by SAP and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW. The network elaborates know-how in the field of business transformation management and publishes it, among other channels, in its own e-Journal called "360° - the Business Transformation Journal". This BTA e-Journal is freely available on the internet (no end date for publication) at http://www.bta-online.com/what-we-do/360-journal/ and http://www.bta-online.com/blog/ ; it is also printed a few hundred times to then distribute it to SAP customers, to academics and people interested.
Thank you very much!!
