Please give images good descriptions
[edit]
I noticed you've uploaded one or more images and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing! __ ABF __ ϑ 12:55, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:41, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

sort of confused
[edit]Hi, while going through all the SLQ images, matching the old uploads with the new dataset, I've come across File:Robert Herbert.jpg, which is nearly the same as Handle identifier: 10462/deriv/133144. Did you retouch the image before uploading? If so, I think I should upload the SLQ image over that file, and then revert back to your revision. John Vandenberg (chat) 12:49, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
- Sure, do whatever you like. I don't remember retouching that image but I may have as there seems to be a scratch on the SLQ version which isn't on that one. --Canley (talk) 12:55, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
- You did a good job of it. I've uploaded the probable original and reverted. Cheers, John Vandenberg (chat) 13:21, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Deprecated License
[edit]
Hello. Thank you for uploading File:William Murray McPherson.jpg, however the license that you have uploaded it under has been deprecated. Please could you select a new free license that describes the rights of the file correctly? If you are not able to do this, the file will be deleted in 7 days.
For more information on licenses that can be used on Wikimedia Commons, please see Commons:Licensing. If you have any questions, please ask at the Help desk. Thank you for your patience and consideration. This is an automatic message by Nikbot.--Filnik 12:38, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

[edit]https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Albert_Street_Brisbane_1883.jpg - is there a quick fix for qld library 'no source' images? probably more like this in the range - was wondering how you move the no source tag and what you put in to obviate the issue of no known... sats (talk) 14:26, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. 99of9 (talk) 01:20, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:3x3 NZ Labour MP montage.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:3x3 NZ Labour MP montage.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Labeling error for Australian federal election polling
[edit]Hi Canley, I believe there is a labeling error in the latest revisions of these two pages: File:Australian federal election polling - 47th parliament - two party preferred.svg and File:Australian federal election polling - 47th parliament - primary.svg. Could you fix this? Thanks, Ezhao02 (talk) 02:07, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Ezhao02: OK, fixed. Thanks for letting me know. --Canley (talk) 02:21, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Asking for a bit of guidance on this
[edit]So in the wake of the discussion on the official Gillard portrait, I went to the NAA website and sent a copyright request for an [image] of Malcolm Fraser as Prime Minister, mainly to see if we could get permission before making any decisions on further such uploads. Earlier today, I got an email back from the NAA saying that they give me copyright permission to publish on Wikipedia the image of Fraser, provided that I acknowledge them as the source of the image. I've now uploaded the image onto WikiCommons, and given your experience in these matters I was hoping you could give it a check and see if the details provided are sufficient, and if there's anything missing or that I should change: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Malcolm_Fraser_1977.jpg. Thescrubbythug (talk) 11:46, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Thescrubbythug: Hi, it looks fine to me, you've got the source, attribution, maybe also link to the NAA copyright page just to show that the CC licence is valid. If you have an email from the National Archives you can also forward it to Commons:Volunteer Response Team (formerly OTRS) and they will assign a number to the image to verify that they have sighted and confirmed the permission statement. --Canley (talk) 12:24, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me. I forwarded the email through to the Volunteer Response Team, but they said they were unable to accept the statement because the NAA didn't give sufficient information - specifically, the NAA failed to "provide a specific release under a free license". Which is something I'll now have to sort out, it seems. --Thescrubbythug (talk) 10:21, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
Gillard and Abbott
[edit]Hi Canley, so I was just wondering if you're able to respond on the deletion nomination page for the official portrait of Julia Gillard. Three months ago I gave a response to your last comment asking if the Gillard and Abbott photos were uploaded with the wrong copyright and if they should immediately be taken down. I ask again mainly because the issue has come up again in recent days on the Australian Wikipedians' notice board - the dispute on whether or not to use these specific images. The legend is incorrect, and has mistakenly labelled the UAP as Other and Other as the UAP. I don't think the UAP has been competing with the Greens to say the least. 5225C (talk • contributions) 04:57, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

I know 2016 was eight years ago now, but can you remember where you sourced this map from? I can't find any electorate results online but I'll look further. PoliticsMaps (talk) 10:51, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- @PoliticsMaps: I used an Excel file of the district-level results which seems to have been produced by the ECQ, but I can't find this file, or any district results on their website. However, there are district results on Antony Green's ABC Elections site (which match the results in the Excel file). --Canley (talk) 12:54, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
