Disabling redundant boxes
[edit]Hi. Creating this template was a very good idea. Would it be possible to add a parameter to disable displaying Authority Control and Wikidata boxes, because they're redundant with info displayed by Template:Creator. See for instance Category:Walter Dick. Thanks. --2A02:2788:A4:32F:24F:4EFF:FE61:F5B9 00:57, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- I noticed that the Authority control box sometimes displays more info than the Creator box does, but still, IMO hiding the redundant box should not be a problem. The code would be something like this: if the display is not disabled, then do as usual with the two boxes; otherwise only do this:
{{Interwiki from wikidata|{}}}

Authority Control bot
[edit]Something to check: does the bot that adds Authority Control boxes knows about this template, so that it doesn't add duplicate boxes? --2A02:2788:A4:32F:24F:4EFF:FE61:F5B9 01:01, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Surname key could be optional
[edit]There are quite a few people categories named by first name only, for instance for popes, nobles, and a few artists and actors. The template could also be used in those cases by sorting only according to parameter #2.
{{{}#if:{} | {{DEFAULTSORT:{}, {}}} | {{DEFAULTSORT:{}}} }}
--2A02:2788:A4:32F:24F:4EFF:FE61:F5B9 01:45, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
Second parameter: problem with accented characters names
[edit]This template can't be used with some given names that contain accented characters, because the sort key for the given name is the same as the real given name used for categorization. Both often match, but far from always.
For instance, using "Éric" as a given name: parameter #2 is the sort key and so must be "Eric", but that also means auto-categorization in "Eric (given name)" instead of "Éric (given name)". Using "Éric" as parameter correctly categorizes but breaks sorting.
Adding an optional "name" parameter to specify the real given name fixes that. One line to change:
{{{}#ifexist: Category:{{{name|{}}}} (given name) | | }}
@Blackcat: not sure you noticed the comments on this page. Thanks in advance for your attention. --2A02:2788:A4:32F:24F:4EFF:FE61:F5B9 02:40, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- 2A02:2788:A4:32F:24F:4EFF:FE61:F5B9, in case it exists, of course? -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 13:41, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
@Blackcat: I just saw that you implemented the change for both surnames and given names. Thanks. But there is a bug: parameter "name" must not be used for both kinds of names, otherwise we have a problem if real names must be additionally specified for both (e.g. "Éric Gagné"), or if the name has both a surname category and a given name category (e.g. "Noël"). I suggest using something like "surname" as parameter name for the surname categorization line, like this: {{{}#ifexist: Category:{{{surname|{}}}} (surname) | | }}

Country parameter
[edit]A new parameter for men and women of *country* is likely preferable, see Category:Men by name by country and Category:Women by name by country. In addition, consider how to adjust more than one country per person due to dual or multiple citizenship.--Russian Rocky (talk) 15:09, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
year of death missing
[edit]i think there should be a better way to talk about living persons. --Ailura (talk) 08:09, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Why should this template be substed?
[edit]That doesn't make sense. Substitution renders this template nearly useless, just a shorthanded text for one edit only. If matching name or year categories are added after an edit, or the template made better, then pages must be edited again! I won't waste more time on that stupidity, goodbye. --2A02:2788:AA:25D:467E:76FF:FE92:CEF 23:28, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

- I see, so we substitute in order to add
DEFAULTSORT
directly. It is a strange solution to the problem. DEFAULTSORT should not be added by a templates since if we have a template like that andDEFAULTSORT
or two templates adding different DEFAULTSORTs, we get page errors were plaguing us in the past. Wikidata person and Creator accomplishes something similar with adding a sortkey (as in
) to automatically added categories (people by name and birth/death categories). I do not like this template since I do not like using Category:Women by name, Category:Men by name or Category:Deceased people by name. --Jarekt (talk) 14:49, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Extra Wikidata entry
[edit]There is unnecessary double link to Wikidata. See Category:Yaffa Zilbershats or any other category.
And also. When we have creator template above, I think that the authority line not needed as this template already generate it. So may be it is a good idea to have line in creator template that hide this line. -- Geagea (talk) 14:32, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, please remove the second Wikidata Q number that is displayed. See: Category:Amy_Eliza_Castles. It is displaying the data from template:Wikidata and template:Wikidata, both display the Q-number. It is distracting. RAN (talk) 22:51, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- The template adds Authority control and On Wikidata. I propose to replace them with Wikidata person! --Marsupium (talk) 09:02, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- Wikidata person limits Authority control only to 7 items (including Q). As this template tend to be use in categories only I suggest to un-limit this line. -- Geagea (talk) 12:39, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- I agree. See Template talk:Creator#Authority control values for more IDs. Also @Jarekt: Is there any reason not to align the IDs displayed of Creator with Authority control? (Perhaps better to respond there) --Marsupium (talk) 14:22, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- I think it should be version of Creator template for categories which allow all authority controls. -- Geagea (talk) 14:41, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- The problem is that some people can have close to 50 identifiers. See for example:

- Showing fewer makes templates more readable, and the rest is just one click away. Now I could limit them only in "File" namespace, where it was the most problematic (where Creator is embedded in other templates), and show all identifiers in categories and creator templates. Another solution would be to add a parameter to Creator to show all the AC identifiers. Extra Wikidata link is per user requests, who considers Wikidata item id to be one of authority control identifiers. --Jarekt (talk) 15:06, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Replace On Wikidata with Wikidata Infobox
[edit]It seems, that Wikidata Infobox is widely used now. I propose to replace Authority control and On Wikidata with Wikidata Infobox. Example: c:Category:Henriette Reker. Any comments about my idea? Raymond 10:23, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

- Agree @Mike Peel: --Jarekt (talk) 21:19, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
- I also agree - however it's not easy to migrate the existing uses over to the Wikidata Infobox since the template has local information here that needs copying to Wikidata first, and names on Wikidata are complicated. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:44, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Sorting by ,
[edit]Categories Category:Damso and Category:M Potter are not sorting properly because of this template. What's the best way to resolve it? Thanks - Themightyquill (talk) 10:47, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
- Themightyquill, how exactly should each be categorised? I see "M Potter" is not using this template, but Infobox Wikidata. — Huntster (t @ c) 11:49, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Huntster: I was just bringing it to attention based on the comments at Commons:Help_desk#Invisible_sort_key_?. Perhaps the problem is not with this template, in which case, sorry. I'm not sure how "M Potter" shoud be sorted (either M or Potter, I guess). My point in bringing it up here is that, ideally, nothing should ever sort accidentally by "comma", and if it does, we might have instructions on how to fix it. -- Themightyquill (talk) 14:37, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
- For the infobox case, either set the given name (P735) and family name (P734) values in the Wikidata entry (at M Potter (Q1880734), they are set to 'no value', which causes the empty sort key). Or just define a new sort key manually using DEFAULTSORT, and pi bot will come along and disable the conflicting automatic one within 24 hours (or set defaultsort=no as a paramameter to the infobox). For the PeopleByName template case, I'd suggest replacing it with the infobox and doing the same. ;-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:55, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Wanted Categories
[edit]Edit request Hello.Wikidata Infobox adds categories whether existing or non existent, please make "PeopleByName" so too. This will increase the wanted categories that I create about the names. Thanks ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 12:30, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- SERGIO You added the first "#ifexist:" condition, I suppose for redlink avoidance. Would you care to comment? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 07:15, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
- Jeff G. Yes, I would be glad to do, but I am not sure to have understood the issue. So far the condition DOES NOT categorize if the category does not exist, the question is...? -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 08:38, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
- SERGIO That defeats the utility of Special:WantedCategories for people by name, which ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 appears to want to use to make more categories for those people. So, the question is "should we categorize into redlinked categories for that purpose?" — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:28, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
- Jeff G. in my opinion is useless (because it falsely assumes that Wanted categories = In-scope categories), but I wouldn't engage in a religion war about that. My aim was just to reduce the number of template-generated red categories, but if you find useful having those, I have no objection. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 13:47, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
