Additional parameter

I think it would be useful to add a second optional parameter to embed things like {{PD-old-auto}} or {{PD/1923}} that require an input of their own. So PD-scan could be used with |1=PD-old-auto |2=1899. De728631 (talk) 17:09, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

adding a second PD-tag

For works created outside the US, we usually need two PD-tags: One for the source country and one for the US. Is there any chance that we can wrap them both into PD-scan? --El Grafo (talk) 11:49, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Perhaps another scan template in the style of {{PD-art-two}} would be a good idea. But even now, if the death year of the author is known and the work was published before 1923, you can use {{PD-scan|PD/1923|deathyear=1881}}. De728631 (talk) 14:31, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Layout template

Categorization

{{Editrequest}} The template should categorize files into Category:PD-scan directly if the subcategory does not yet exist. The original itself

Pass through 'country' and 'reason' to sublicense

{{editrequest}} This template should pass through the 'country' and 'reason' parameters to the nested license, if they are included (exactly as {{PD-Art}} does). This allows license templates that require those parameters to be used with PD-Scan (for example, the "public domain works" warning on this file will go away because 'country=US' has been provided). This requires two changes to protected pages:

• On Template:PD-scan, immediately after |deathyear={{{deathyear|}}}, add |country={{{country|}}}|reason={{{reason|}}}
• On Template:PD-scan/en, do the same thing.

3d scans

I spotted today that the template text itself nor Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag limits this template to 2D scans, however the usage instructions do. So the natural question is, now that Commons supports 3D files can PD-scan be used for faithful scans of PD objects or do we need a separate license for that? This ties into both the Nefertiti bust scan discussions and comments made at d:Wikidata:Properties_for_deletion#Property:P6243. /Lokal_Profil 11:50, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

You probably won't get a lot of participation on this talk page; if you actually need to establish consensus for a purpose, you should mention this discussion on COM:VPC. It is pretty clear to me that PD-scan could be applied to such 3D files. The rationale for PD-scan is that insufficient original creative work has been added to the work by scanning it. This isn't true for photographs of 3D work because the choice of angle, background, lighting, etc adds creative work. Those elements do not exist in this case - there is little if any original creative work added by the process of scanning. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:15, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
