Description La perle du Danube, ainsi surnomme-t-on la capitale de la Hongrie. Comme la Seine à Paris ou la Tamise à Londres, le grand fleuve impose sa marque en plein coeur de la ville, qu'il traverse comme un large chemin aquatique, noble et majestueux, séparant la colline de Buda (rive droite) de Pest, étalée sur la rive gauche. De la Forêt-Noire à la mer Noire, ce monstre liquide irrigue toute l'Europe centrale. C'est à Budapest qu'il est le plus présent et "c'est dans les plaines hongroises que le Danube devient un grand fleuve", écrit Istvàn Bart. Obstacle redoutable pour les envahisseurs (Huns, Mongols, Turcs), il fut un atout géographique pour les empereurs d'Autriche, qui pouvaient en quelques heures de bateau descendre de Vienne.
