Summary
[edit]DescriptionView toward Llanbethery across field - geograph.org.uk - 1234686.jpg |
English: View toward Llanbethery across field The huge DARA hangar can be seen on the far right. It's the right colour but the wrong shape for the white elephant it has proven, thus far, to be. Built as the foundation of Project Red Dragon to provide servicing facilities to the RAF fleet of aircraft, it was overtaken by events. While the Ministry of Defence were planning to civilianise aircraft servicing with its new organisation, the RAF were investigating provision of facilities at RAF bases. The latter proved more cost effective with a saving of £1.4bn. It is hoped that the £113 million spent on the hangar will be recovered with the establishment of a 'Defence Academy' at St Athan. |
