Description |
English: This view of Seattle was taken facing north from about where the Public Market Parking Garage is now located. The large building in the center of the frame is the Seattle Seamen's Institute (also Seamen's Bethel, or Seaman's Hotel), opened by the Seamen's Friend Society in 1904 as a home for retired sailors and mariners. On the eastern side of Western Avenue the back of the Main Arcade of the Pike Place Market sits above the street. Further north on Western Avenue (at about the center left of the frame), the old Armory building that was demolished in the 1960s can be seen with its rounded roof. Signs in image: Seamen's Home; Seattle Cabinet Wks; Seeds; Hotel Livingston; E. R. Butterfield & Sons, Undertakers; Edward L. Gomoll, Store Furniture, Show Cases, 1915 1st Ave, Red Front Furniture; Stewart Hotel; Emery Candy Co. Caption information source: The Seattle Daily Times, January 19, 1914, p. 11
