Summary

[edit]
Description

A viceroy butterfly (Limenitis archippus) rests on Canada bluejoint, a native wet meadow grass, at Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge in South Dakota. Viceroys are often confused with monarchs as they look very similar. The easiest way to seperate them is the viceroy has a lateral line running through the hindwings and the monarch does not. The viceroy is also smaller than monarchs.

The viceroy is found in moist areas including willow thickets and wet meadows. As the monarch caterpillar requires milkweed, the viceroy caterpillar needs willows (Salix) and cottonwoods (Populus).
