DescriptionTwo men probably at Fort Macquarie after GREYCLIFFE disaster, Nove (8068942823).jpg |
English: On 3 November 1927, RMS TAHITI came into collision with the Sydney ferry GREYCLIFFE off Bradleys Head. The ferry sunk and claimed 40 lives. During the rescue efforts, the eastern side of the Fort Macquarie Tram Depot was transformed into a casualty clearing station as bodies of the dead and injured were placed on the pathway at the Man O' War Steps. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. |
