The Harris Sysiem of Pumping. 269 under this piston is open to the atmosphere; it therefore follows thatas the low pressure cylinder exhausts the air out of the tank and thepipe connecting it with the switch, creating a vacuum, a vacuum isnecessarily thus produced above the little piston ; when this point isreached, the atmospheric pressure pushes the piston upwards and thisin turn, being suitably connected with a rotary valve on a 34^ inch pipeconnected with the high pressure air pipe, opens this valve, admittingthe air which acts upon another piston similar to the steam piston in anordinary pump. This latter piston is directly connected with a plunger,corresponding to the water-end of a pump, but this latter acts as avalve, opening or closing the passages leading to the pipes connectingcompressor and tanks with the switch.
