Summary

[edit]
Description Hiroshima city tram (streetcar) route # 2: that's my ride to the Atom Bomb Dome. Hiroshima is notable in Japan, for its light rail system, nicknamed Hiroden. The service, which some call the Moving Streetcar Museum started in 1912. Services were interrupted in 1945 by the atomic bomb, but were restored as soon as was practicable. In fact servicse between Koi/Nishi Hiroshima and Tenma-cho were resumed a mere three days after the bombing. Trams (streetcar) and light rail vehicles are still rolling down Hiroshima's streets, including streetcars 651 and 652, which survived the atomic blast and are among the older streetcars in the system. When Kyoto and Fukuoka discontinued their trolley systems, Hiroshima bought up their rolling stock at discounted prices, and, by 2011, the city had 298 streetcars, more than any other city in Japan. Hiroden cars 651 and 652, which survived the atomic bomb were still running in Hiroshima as of 2015. (Hiroshima,Japan, Apr/ May 2019)
