English: An exhausted protester (right) sleeps while resting his head on the track wheel of a tank in Cairo's Tahrir Square while a protester (centre) reads Al Wafd newspaper. The location was at the north entrance to Tahrir Square by the Egyptian Museum. A small supply of bread and what looks like one small circular container of cheese is half hidden in a blanket.
The newspaper headline reads "There are no alternatives - step down or leave !", referring of course to President Mubarak. Al Wafd had been for years the main opposition party's newspaper although prior to 25 January it kept its' content mostly within tight censorship guidelines. However from the start of the uprising its coverage was much more sympathetic to the cause of the protesters than that of the state owned Al Ahram. For instance on 3rd February Al Ahram claimed that "Millions support Mubarak by holding marches...", although the article ran next to a photo of a huge rally in which you could clearly see the words "Down with the regime". Meanwhile Al Wafd reported that "The National Party (the official government party) burns Egypt. It used employees and thugs to demonstrate in support of Mubarak and to attack demonstrators." |
