English: The railway at Hatton bank (1) Looking east at a Class 168 diesel unit number 168003 coasting downhill at Hatton bank. The train, operated by Chiltern Railways, is on a Birmingham to London service.
The ex-GWR (Great Western Railway) London to Birmingham main line climbs out of the River Avon valley west of Warwick along a five-mile section known as Hatton bank. For much of the five miles, the gradient of 1:110. In steam days, banking engines were needed to assist the heaviest trains up the bank but modern diesel trains make light work of the climb. The Grand Union Canal runs parallel to the railway and ascends the slope through the 21 locks of the Hatton flight. |
