He walked from New Salem toSpringfield, borrowed of Air. Stuart a load ofbooks, carried them upon his back to NewSalem, and commenced his legal studies. Withearnestness which absorbed every energy of hissoul, he entered upon his student-life. He hadno pleasant oftice, no choice library, none ofthe appliances of literary luxury, to entice him.Much of his time, his study was the shade ofan oak tree. When the legislature assembled,he trudged on foot, with his pack on his back,one hundred miles to Vandalia, then the capi-tal of the State. He was a silent, but studiousmember, gaining strength and wisdom everyday. At the close of the session, he walkedhome, and resumed the study of the law, sup-porting himself by surveying. These years ofthought and study had accomplished theirwork, and suddenly he flashed forth an orator.

In 1836, he was re-elected to the StateLegislature. Mr. Lincoln was now twenty-seven 3ears of age, and a prominent man inthe State of Illinois. It was during this ses-sion of the legislature that )\Ir. Lincoln firstmet Stephen A. Douglas, who was then buttwenty-three years old. The slavery questionwas beginning to agitate the country. Bothparties were bowing submissive to that greatpower. Some extreme pro-slavery resolutionspassed the legislature. There were but twomen who ventured to remonstrate. AbrahamLincoln was one.
