Text Appearing Before Image:
, I shall only observe that, as physic isto be given at any time, and under any circumstances, with perfect safety, the sooner the hunter has hisfirst dose after he comes into the stable, the betterhe is enabled to withstand the sudden change from thenatural to the artificial state to which we are aboutto subject him ; and the sooner will his habit of bodybe prepared for that excitement which his subsequentexercise and change of diet are certain, more or less,to produce. I have seen some of my acquaintance givetheir hunters physic when at grass, with the hope ofpreventing their getting too fat; but their expecta-tions have failed, inasmuch as the aptitude to getflesh always increases after a horse has been wellcleansed by physic, as training grooms can moreparticularly vouch for. If, however, a person doesturn his hunters to grass, I see no objection to theirgiving them physic. It may be the means of forward-ing their condition, by getting sooner into work, when taken up for the season.
Text Appearing After Image:
PHYSIC 49 As the system of getting hunters in condition whichhave been at grass is, in most respects, so well known,it would be presuming in me to attempt to give direc-tions respecting it ; I will therefore merely detailthe plan I would pursue had I a horse to deal withunder such circumstances. My directions to mygroom should be as follows. The hunter should be taken up certainly not laterthan the 20th of July. Soon after this periodthe nights begin to get chilly, and his coat wouldreceive a check if exposed to them. It would losethat soft, silky feel which it generally has if the horseis in perfect health previously to that time. Whenfirst taken to house he should be kept as cool aspossible, and, if it can be avoided, there should notbe more than one horse in every other stall, be the stableever so large. We will suppose a man has six hunters, perhaps all kept in one stable in the winter. Whenhis horses are first taken up, he should not put morethan two or three at farthest into it,
