| Description | The Shinkansen trains to Osaka leave from the upper level platforms- these are the escalators to get there. Almost all of Japan's railways run on the narrow 3' 6" gauge. The Shinkansen bullet trains however run on dedicated separate standard gauge 4' 8.5" track and so the Shinkansen platforms at Japanese stations are separate from the platforms for the rest of the trains on the JR network. Many of the dedicated Shinkansen stations have 'Shin' added before their names to show that these are dedicated Shinkansen train stations. While Hiroshima station is still called such, one classic example of the Shin added is Shin-Osaka station. However the term Shin also means new, so Sappporo train station is called Shin-Sapporo though it is not a Shinkansen station. (Hiroshima,Japan, Apr/ May 2019) |
