Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe River Tyne Bridge under construction 1926 - Flickr - kitmasterbloke.jpg |
This is one of a group of 9 photographs which were published by the City Electrical Company around 1933 to show some of the prestigious projects to which they had supplied electrical equipment. Of particular note is the River Tyne Bridge under construction during 1926. This was the first dedicated road bridge to directly cross the deep valley of the Tyne linking Newcastle & Gateshead. Previously, only a low level swing bridge was available exclusively for motor traffic (The top of which is visible in the picture), although the High Level and King Edward bridges already carried rail traffic and the High Level could take some road traffic on its lower deck. The very latest techniques in steel and poured concrete construction were used on the Tyne Bridge, which then carried the main A1 highway linking Edinburgh to London. Today the City has been bypassed by a new A1 route (twice - once through the Tyne Tunnel) but the Tyne Bridge is still in daily use providing a quick & convenient link between the two busy urban centres. |
