A GALAGO. natives. Here I have seen in captivity many mandrills(Papio maimon) and drills (P. leucophceus). At the DutchHouse in Banana there is, or was at the time of my visit,an admirable collection of West African monkeys, in-cluding some very fine male and female mandrills. AtStanley Pool I have heard of baboons * being seen, and* Probably Papio Sphinx. s 2 260 A JOURNEY UP THE RIVER CONGO. the natives of Ki-rnpoko tell strange tales of large man-like apes in the interior. The gorilla and chimpanzee,which are entirely absent from the Lower Coogo, probablyapproach the Upper river above the falls. Certainlysome large anthropoid ape is known to the Ba-teke andBa-yansi, for they recognised with loud cries an engravingof the gorilla, and said frequently that he was found onthe north bank of the river. This has been repeatedlytold me by natives of Bolobo (who in speaking of theanthropoid ape used the word ngina), by chancevisitors at Msuata, and also at Ki-mpoko and other placeson Stanle
