Summary
[edit]DescriptionSwanswell Gate - geograph.org.uk - 1142710.jpg |
English: Swanswell Gate One of two surviving gates of the twelve original gates in the city wall[1] stands in the corner of Lady Herbert's garden by Hales Street. It was formerly Priory Gate, the private gate for St Mary's Priory to its orchards outside the wall. When Hales Street was built alongside in 1850 the gate became a dwelling house and the archway was blocked up to give living space (it is no longer a dwelling). A grade I listed building.
Just visible to the left is part of the old Coventry fire station on the other side of Hales Street, built in 1902 and now converted to restaurants. |
