Summary

[edit]
Description Marktown is a small Garden City Movement community set amongst steel rolling mills and the BP_Amoco refineray in Gary, Indiana, USA. Buolt to a high standard and incorporating a lot of Arts & Crafts detail in the 1920s, this community is now under severe threat. Amoco would like to buy up all the houses and demolish them to make way for a car park. The local Mayor suspects that is because their refinery has a poor safety record and they don't want to be sued by Marktown residents when it finally goes bang! So buildings are left to decay until demolition is the only option. Many have already gone, reduced to open patches of dirt between the neat rows of houses. But this community is strong and is fighting for it's future with a Save Marktown campaign. Already it has been added to the national Register of Historic Places - but that only gives protection from Federal development. It is such a shame - these were quality brick-built structures with plenty of charm and character. Walking around central Chicago, there are plenty of guys who could use somewhere to live and a job in the steel mill.
