Summary

[edit]
Description

The scientific name of the striped skunk is Mephitis mephitis. The definition for mephitis is: a noxious, pestilential, or foul exhalation from the earth, also : STENCH. So its scientific name means Stinky Stinky. Striped skunks are currently not common on Seedskadee NWR. Great horned owls are known to commonly prey on skunks and we have a lot of great horned owls. Coyotes will also prey on skunks when other prey is scarce, trading a dousing of skunk spray to avoid starvation.
