Only floating frag-ments and white sections of the tentacles wereleft to prove the reality of what they had seen.The shuman gave the signal to proceed, andagain the steady beat of the paddles soundedas the long bidarka shot forward. No one of theparty but bore the marks of the battle and thegashes which told of the touch of the deadlysucking disks of the tentacles. There was not a sound except the splash of thepaddles. As the sun showedabove the horizon, all around was sea and sky.Nowhere was there any sight of land or visiblemarks or ranges by which to steer their course.Yet without compass, the shuman in the sternsteered unerringly toward the distant horizon.At last far away, where the skys rim touched thesea, showed what seemed to be a bank of fleecyclouds. As they came nearer, the white masstowered higher and higher, like a huge castle,with turrets and battlements of fleecy cloud andfloating mist. Straight toward this white bulkthe bidarka drove; and as the bank grew higherand higher above the horizon, the Argonauts sud-denly realized that they were looking upon landshrouded in clouds and mist. A murmur wentall around the boat. Goreloi! Goreloi! the whisper ran, and thefaces of the weary crew brightened as if lighted bythe rising sun.
