National Park Seminary was a young ladies' finishing school in Montgomery County, Maryland, near Washington DC, a place where wealthy families would send their daughters for some further education beyond high school. It had a number of sororities including the Theta Sigma Rho, where this surprisingly fine rag appears to have originated by an otherwise unknown composer. Published by the Thompson Music Co. in Chicago and New York in 1909. This title also appeared in the Nora Hulse CD "60 Years of Ragtime Piano". Thank you to JohnJ1995 for the CD info. Score #114 in my current ongoing series "Women Ragtime Composers" featuring interesting scores all written by ragtime-era women. Plenty more coming. Original score source was from York University at this link: https://yorkspace.library.yorku.ca/xmlui/bitstream/handle/10315/22066/JAC003466.pdf This is a reproduction of the original score. A few corrections were made, such as the RH chord at measure 16; at measure 19 added missing bass clef in LH; at measure 26 two sharps added to the B nat chord; m.40 flats added to second RH Bb octave; plus any other missing accidental. |
