English: Smoke on the horizon - Chudleigh At first one might consider the distant hills to be on fire but it is more likely that this is 'swayling', the process of burning off gorse or heather in a controlled manner to allow fresh grass beneath it to grow and to prevent the gorse from taking over.
The view is from a layby on the A38 approaching Chudleigh on the downhill run from Haldon. |
