Title |
Silver dress fitting, 2009T732 |
||
Description |
English: Silver gilt dress fitting, probably a cap hook, in the form of a bird with outstretched wings, it's head turned towards it's left wing. A small part of the head has broken off. The bird may be an eagle, and may be holding a scroll in it's beak which cuts across the left wing to the birds feet. If so, this may be a representation of the Eagle of St. John. The remains of a hook, the end flattened, is soldered to the reverse diagonally from the birds right wing to tail / tip of left wing, and is broken at the edge of the front-plate. Very similar to an example from Bosworth, Leicestershire (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 357, fig.512).
Late 15th - early 16th century.
