Summary
[edit]DescriptionSiltstone (Bedford Shale, Upper Devonian; Rocky Fork, Gahanna, Ohio, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Siltstone from the Devonian of Ohio, USA. (bedding plane view)
Siltstone is a common siliciclastic sedimentary rock. As the name suggests, it is composed of lithified silt grains, each of which are between 1/16 and 1/256 of a millimeter in size. The sample seen here is from the upper Bedford Shale in Ohio. Bedford outcrops are scarce, because the rocks are soft and outcrops weather and become vegetated relatively quickly. The Bedford is part of a coarsening-upward succession that starts with the Olentangy Shale, followed by the Ohio Shale, the Bedford Shale, and the Berea Sandstone. The Bedford Shale is Famennian in age (= late Late Devonian) and consists of soft, grayish and reddish clayshales. Interbeds of coarser-grained siliciclastics occur in the upper Bedford. Stratigraphy: siltstone interbed, uppermost Bedford Shale, just below the Bedford Shale-Berea Sandstone contact, Famennian Stage, upper Upper Devonian Locality: creek cut along Rocky Fork, just north of Havens Corners Road & just east of Hamilton Road & just south of Clark Road, Gahanna, western Jefferson Township, northeastern Franklin County, central Ohio, USA |
