Description
English: from the Drago Albani Collection.

Medium-grained crystalline marble.

The panel, from the long side of a sarcophagus, depicts the secret love affair between Mars and Venus narrated in the ancient sources (Odyssey, VIII, 325-343). Venus's face must have had the features of the deceased, whose beauty was thus compared to that of the goddess.

The stle allows us to date the relief to the second half of 2nd Century AD.
