Summary
[edit]DescriptionSalongo School.jpg |
English: The communities seem more active than in other areas in the east. On the road from Lulimba to Kilembwe, villagers have rebuilt their homes and schools without support from NGOs.
When they came back after six years nothing was left. The priorities of the returning families were in order; rebuild their houses, clear their fields and rebuild the school. Each village used communal solutions to rebuild their houses; in Mahembe the mason lowered his price for erecting the walls, in Maindombe the mason worked for free in exchange for the village working his fields and in Kabeya groups formed for house raising with the owner providing food for the day. In all villages they built a school without assistance from NGOs. Two of the schools are solid large structures of adobe brick. Construction took 2 months of working 2 weeks out of 4. This communal work is called Salongo. Two of the villages also rehabilitated or constructed a health centre with the help of AMI and ACTED. |
