Title |
Roman to Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Zoomorphic Buckle |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Roman to Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) mis-cast zoomorphic buckle (c. AD 350-c. 450).
Classified as a Hawkes and Dunning Type IB (1961, 45ff.; see also Appels and Laycock (2007, 206ff.). The pin and plate are missing. This buckle is 'D'-shaped, with a pair of outward-facing horse-heads, one at each end of the outer edge. The outer edge comprises a pair of degenerated confronted dolphins; the crests of dolphins on type IA buckles having developed into horse-heads. The horse-heads which are similar have no eyes and have small punch marks on the front surface indicating manes. The front and rear are similar, except that on the rear face the dolphins are absent and the inside of the frame is bevelled. The bar is sub-rectangular in cross-section. At the outer edge, and just off-centre, is a small length of casting sprue, rectangular in cross-section. There is a small sprue scar at the centre of the outer edge of the bar. This buckle has a matt green patina. Length: 28.52mm; width: 22.86mm; thickness: 3.59mm. Weight: 8.81g. These according to Hawkes (1961, 23) are likely to be of British manufacture influenced by continental styles. Hawkes (1961, 26) comments that buckles of this type are difficult to date. However, it is suggested that they probably began to be made only towards the end of the 4th century, continuing to be used into the middle of the 5th century. Hawkes, S. C. and Dunning, G. C. 1961.
