Summary

Description

English:

The silky shark is a pelagic cartilaginous fish with a cosmopolitan distribution. It is found in the waters of the Western Atlantic, the Caribbean, as well as in the Western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. It lives in waters around 23-24°C, and rich in schools of tuna.

Measuring an average of 2 to 3 m as an adult, this species is recognizable by its elongated and thin body, its gray color and its white belly. The position of the first dorsal fin is characteristic of this species: short, it is behind the pectoral fins.

It is photographed here off the Seychelles, in the company of numerous rainbow runners ( Elagatis bipinnulata ). This species of fish lives in schools, close to the surface (between 2 and 10 m deep), in pelagic waters above 21°C, in the Atlantic, Red Sea and Indo-Pacific zone.

Measuring on average 1 m in length, this species of the jack family is recognizable in particular thanks to its metallic blue-green back, its two blue bands placed on its sides (separated by a yellow band).
