Description

Dolostones over shales in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The yellowish-brown colored unit in the upper part of this outcrop is the Renfro Member - it consists principally of very shallow marine/marginal marine dolostones. The lower, gray colored unit consists of shales of the Nada Member. The Nada is part of a deltaic succession called the Borden Formation (Lower Mississippian). The Renfro was formerly considered to be part of the Borden, but it has been reassigned to the overlying unit, the Slade Formation (Middle to Upper Mississippian).

Locality: roadcut along the western side of Route 460, south-southeast of the town of Frenchburg, central Menifee County, eastern Kentucky, USA (37° 56’ 31.07” North latitude, 83° 37’ 12.31” West longitude)
