Description

Ursus spelaeus Rosenmüller & Heinroth, 1794 - cave bear (reconstruction) from the Pleistocene of Europe. (museum signage, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA)

The cave bear, Ursus spelaeus, was an important component of Europe’s Pleistocene mammalian biota. The species is represented by abundant fossil bones, typically found in cave deposits (the species name “spelaeus” means “cave”). Like extant bears, Ursus spelaeus was omnivorous. It went extinct near the end of the Pleistocene (~10,000 years ago).

Museum info.: "The oldest bear-like animals lived in Europe during the Oligocene. Later, bears spread throughout most of the world. The cave bear is one of the best known of all Pleistocene mammals. It spent the harsh winter hibernating in caves. Thousands of fossil bones have been found in caves in Europe. Cave bears were occasionally hunted by early humans. The large skull and highly arched forehead distinguish this bear from the present-day Alaskan brown bear. Despite its large size and fearsome appearance, the cave bear's diet was largely vegetarian."

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Mammalia, Carnivora, Ursidae
