Den første fastskolen på Ranheim startet i Lykkens Rodestue 1855 og flyttet 1858 til Ranheim Nedre. 1873 - 1903 hadde skolen tilhold på Elvetun. Skolen åpnet 1903, samme år som skolekretsen ble opprettet. Skoletomten fradelt fra Ranheim Nedre 1903. Skolen utbygd flere ganger - første byggetrinn ferdig 1903 og en treetasjes bygning oppført 1917 (ark. Rolf G. Bruun). Ranheim skole var beslaglagt av tyskerne under andre verdenskrig. Bygningen fra 1917 ble 1963 redusert til to etasjer, samtidig som et nybygg ble oppført (ark. Torleiv Vold); denne ombygd 1985 (ark. Dag Henning Braathen). I 1996 kom et tilbygg på 840 kvm (ark. Ole Gustav Øverdahl).
