Shallow coastal waters are essential habitats for many species of fish: they grow there before being able to reach their adult living areas.

Summary

Description

English:

Shallow coastal waters are essential habitats for many species of fish: they grow there before being able to reach their adult living areas. However, these areas essential to their development are often degraded by coastal developments (ports, dikes, etc.). One solution is to install artificial habitats to rehabilitate natural environments. Artificial seagrass beds, or "reed beds", reproduce the habitats of local marine species by mimicking the characteristics of Mediterranean Posidonia seagrass beds. The concrete blocks, made using 3D printing, aim to recreate cavities to shelter fish.

The overall ecological challenge of this action is to revitalize the ecological functions of the coastal environment and in particular to promote the return of juvenile fish. These measures will be subject to in-depth monitoring to assess their effectiveness over time.

These experiments were carried out with the start-up Seaboost in partnership with the Toulon Provence Méditerranée Metropolis, Port Authority, and its concessionaire, the Var Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
