Quoins. A quoin is a metal expanding device used to secure typographical elements in a chase. Central screw with two adjustable rectangular wedges. Accession Number: SH.2009.401 A quoin is a metal wedge which fits into the space between the type and the edge of a chase, and is tightened by a quoin key to fix the metal type in place. A chase is a metal frame in which type and blocks are placed and held ready to print by letterpress. Edinburgh City of Print is a joint project between City of Edinburgh Museums and the Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE). The project aims to catalogue and make accessible the wealth of printing collections held by City of Edinburgh Museums.
