The portrait depicts the young Queen Victoria (1819-1901) who ascended to the British throne in 1837 when William IV died. Following her coronation in 1838, she married Prince Albert in 1840. Because of the sitter's youth, the portrait likely dates from the first years of her reign, possibly commemorating one of these early events. / Ce portrait représente la jeune reine Victoria (1819-1901) montée sur le trône de Grande-Bretagne en 1837 après la mort de Guillaume IV. Après son couronnement en 1838, elle épousa le prince Albert en 1840. Sa jeune physionomie sur ce portrait suggère que l’oeuvre a probablement été réalisée au cours des premières années de son règne, peut-être pour en commémorer l'un des premiers événements. |
