Description
English: Post medieval, 16th century, silver gilt cap hook in the form of a hollow cast domed circular cushion sitting on a circular backplate with scalloped edges. The cushion is decorated with three concentric rings of granulated ornament, with filigree wire bordering each ring, and around each individual granulation. The circular sectioned S-shaped hook is soldered to the reverse - the very tip of the hook is missing. There is no evidence for an attachment loop.

Length 20.4mm, width (diameter of backplate) 16.50mm, thickness (including hook) 18.8 mm, thickness of body 7.0mm, weight 4.54g.

Treasure Report: Description: Silver gilt cap hook, indicated by the form of the hook and the shape of the object, and the lack of evidence for an attachment bar. It is in the form of a hollow-cast domed circular cushion sitting on a circular backplate with scalloped edges. The cushion is decorated with three concentric rings of granulated ornament, with filigree wire bordering each ring, and around each individual granulation. The circular sectioned S-shaped hook is soldered to the reverse.

Dimensions: Length 20.4mm, width (diameter of backplate) 16.50mm, thickness (including hook) 18.8 mm, thickness of body 7.0mm, weight 4.54g.

The precious metal content of the object fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%.

Note: Similar in form, although with different decoration, to 2004 T439 (Bruton, Somerset) (Treasure Annual Report 2004, p129, no.275).
