Title |
Post medieval: Complete asymmetrical double loop buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle dating to the Post Medieval period circa AD1600-1700. The pin is missing but the buckle frame is complete and in fair condition. In plan, the buckle frame is sub-rectangular. One loop is sub-rectangular, the other loop is slightly larger with more rounded corners. The longer sides of the buckle are D-shaped in section. The side of the buckle frame where the end of the pin would have rested is rounded in plan with a slight bulge on the inside edge of the loop. Two very faint grooved, angled lines are just visible on the face of the buckle where the end of the pin would have rested. The opposing side of the frame is slightly bent. There is a vertical, grooved line running alongside the loop edge. The reverse of the buckle is flat and plain. The surfaces of the brooch are worn due to movement in the plough soil, with and uneven brown / dark brown patina.
Length: 17.69mm. Width: 24.70mm. Thickness: 1.94mm. Weight: 2.0g. A comparable buckle is recorded in Whitehead: 2003, p91, fig 570 |
