Title
Post Medieval: Complete sub annular shoe / knee buckle frame
Description
English: A complete copper alloy sub annular buckle, with a drilled frame, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1660 to AD 1720).

Only the buckle frame and spindle are present. The chape and pin are missing, presumably lost in antiquity. The buckle frame is sub annular in plan, with a drilled frame, for a separate spindle. The frame exhibits moulded decoration, consisting of multiple transverse grooves around the frame. Evidence of tinning is present on the surface of the buckle frame. The spindle is still present, with traces of the iron pin still wrapped around the spindle. The spindle has a circular cross section.

The buckle frame measures 20.5 mm in length, 17.4 mm wide and 4.1 mm thick. It weighs 3.1 grams.

The buckle frame is a dark brown colour, with an even surface patina.

A similar buckle frame has been recorded as #608 by Whitehead (2003, p 98) and has been dated to the Early Post Medieval period (c. AD 1660 to AD 1720). Whitehead suggests that they were originally used as either shoe or knee buckles.
