Title
Post-medieval shoe or knee buckle
Description
English: A post-medieval copper-alloy shoe or knee buckle with separate pin and stud chape surviving largely intact. The frame of the buckle is symmetrical, comprising two roughly D-shaped sides which curve inwards towards the axis bar. At the centre of the sides of the frame, and at each of the outer edges there are sections of moulded radiating lines; at one end these act as a pin rest with central groove. A separate iron spindle/axis bar is retained within two opposing holes in the frame; traces of corrosion product are visible. A separate stud chape is also retained attached by the axis bar, which sits within a cylindrical sleeve at the chape's inner end. From this the sides of the chape converge before terminating in a rounded end with a perforation, presumably to which the separate stud was rivetted (the stud is now absent). The lower surface of the chape bears a stamped maker's mark, just before the sleeve: the letters I H. A flattened and tapering pin has been looped around the central point of the axis bar; its loop contained within a slot in the aforementioned chape's cylinder. The buckle is curved in profile as part of its use. A similar buckle can be found illustrated in Whitehead (2003, 99; no. 620).
