Title |
Post-medieval shoe or knee buckle |
||
Description |
English: A slightly corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval asymmetrical shoe or knee buckle (c. 17th century). The broadly D-shaped frame is bevelled externally, bevelling echoed internally on the lower surface. The sides curve to a point at the outer edge. Around half way along each side is a raised moulding on the upper surface to accommodate the spindle; the lower surface is flat at these points. This pin bar has been lost, although traces of orange corrosion product around the holes drilled to take the bar suggest that it was made of iron. The pointed outer edge has been bent upwards in profile as a result of old damage. Such buckles were often tinned, although no traces of such a coating are discernible on this example. This piece has simply corroded to a grey colour almost entirely covered with patches of off-white and light-green corrosion. A parallel can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 97; ref. 598); an example with extant chape can be found on this database - HAMP-82AD26. |
